Universe, older than it looks

When astronomers (Bond 2013) first dated the star HD 140283, which lies a mere 190 lightyears from Earth in the constellation of Libra, they were puzzled. This rare, star appeared to be rather ancient and was quickly nicknamed the Methuselah star. It is a metal-poor sub-giant with an apparent magnitude of 7.223. The star had been known for a century or so as a high-velocity star, but its presence in our solar neighborhood and its composition were at odds with theory. Moreover, HD140283 wasn’t just an oddity from at the dawn of the Universe, formed short time after the Big Bang. Rather, it seems to be some 14.46 billion years old…which makes it older than the Universe itself, currently estimated to be 13.817 billion years old (estimated from the cosmic microwave background radiation).

Of course, it was ultimately revealed that the error margins on estimating the age of the Methuselah star were in fact much wider than the original research suggested, the astronomers add a margin of 800 million years. The error bars could have it a lot younger, which makes it among the earliest known stellar objects in the Universe, but certainly within the boundaries of time since the Big Bang. But, what of that upper limit on the age? Is there a possibility that this star could somehow be as old as the original measurements suggested but still lie “this side of the Big Bang?

Writing in the International Journal of Exergy, Birol Kilkis of Baskent University, in Ankara, Turkey, thinks so. In 2004, he introduced the Radiating Universe Model (RUM). This intriguing concept suggests that exergy, the energy that is available to do work and the first focus of thermodynamics theory in the 19th Century, will flow from the Big Bang to what Kilkis refers to a thermal sink of infinite size at absolute zero (0 Kelvin) far, far into the future. Using RUM, Kilkis calculated the age of the universe to be 14.885 ± 0.040 billion years, which is marginally older, in the grand scheme of things, than the microwave background estimate, but easily accommodates the original age of HD 140283.

Interestingly, Kilkis’ RUM theory gives a new dynamic value to the Hubble constant and suggests that the expansion of the universe has been accelerating since 4.4 billion years after the Big Bang, which may well accommodate the notion of dark energy. Moreover, this accelerating rate of increase is itself slowing, which in turn may be accounted for by dark matter. Dark energy and dark matter are, as have been discussed widely, controversial physical phenomena for which we have absolutely no explanation whatsoever, but we do have observational evidence that suggests they are real. In addition, RUM hints that Planck’s constant is not a pure constant at all but a cosmological variable, a point for which some supported was reported in 2013 by Seshavatharam and Lakshminarayana.

“The yet unasked-unanswered question is where the observable universe is expanding. If the expanding universe has a mass and volume, whatever its shape is, it must be expanding into another medium,” says Kilkis. That “medium” is of infinite size and lies at absolute zero, thus acting as a thermal sink for the universe, which is a thermally radiating source lying within the sink.

Call for papers: "Impact of Reconfiguration on Collaborative Enterprise Performance"

The objective of International journal of Collaborative Enterprise (IJCEnt) is to provide a platform for interaction between researchers and practitioners who are dealing with theory and applications. It is also to bring together a selection of new perspectives that focuses on resources in producing and delivering value, analyze the new strategies and the organisations that support the collaboration and reconfiguration. The IJCEnt invites papers for the special issue “Impact of Reconfiguration on Collaborative Enterprise Performance”, which aims to impart and share the recent research, development and applications dealing with collaborative enterprises.

Collaboration and cooperation are vital growth opportunities, but manufacturers, service providers and suppliers are uncertain of how to most effectively approach the rapidly evolving market. Enterprise collaboration is receiving increasingly more attention than ever before.

Reconfiguration can play a crucial role in collaborative enterprise. Reconfiguration introduces a means for system flexibility. This can be possible with the help of a modular approach and developing relationships among products, processes and resources. The data and information is also required to be made available to all stake holders of the enterprise. The concepts of commitments with penalties and subcontracting may also facilitate effective reconfigured collaborative enterprise. Thus, there is need to focus on the real challenges of rapid constraint evaluation for the designing and/or reconfiguration of present systems to cater for present/future collaborative enterprise.

It is also evident that enterprises value collaboration, choose between alternatives, integrate business processes, and participate in networking in both the local and global markets. This issue aims at disseminating the discussion and exchange of global experience in terms of models and means emphasizing how to design, run, control and optimise collaborative enterprises. A further objective is to share innovative approaches that are relevant to the sustainable development of the manufacturing sector in the global context.

Case studies and papers should provide in-depth insight into, but not limited to, the following areas in the context to collaborative enterprises:
  • Why, when and how collaborative enterprises are reconfiguring their business processes?
  • How they choose between alternatives?
  • What should the pace of reconfiguration be?
  • How do enterprises develop reconfiguration roadmaps?
  • What the roadblocks and areas of concern, as well as the challenges?

Call for papers: "Challenge-oriented Research and Innovation: Concepts, Practices and Policies"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Foresight and Innovation Policy.

The notion that research and innovation can contribute to the resolution of major (grand or global) societal challenges has become pervasive in contemporary research and innovation (R&I) policy at both European and national levels. This brings forth a number of challenges in research and innovation policy design and analysis: How are these new challenge-driven approaches included in the prevailing repertoire of research and innovation policy and what kind of impacts may they have on the practice of policy making? What are current challenge-driven research and innovation policies and how should their development be understood and analysed? In which policy-making cycles has the concept (re)emerged from whom and why? How are challenge-oriented policies operationalised? What special features do/should challenge-oriented policies and policy instruments conform with?

These issues need to be addressed through a reflexive and forward-looking approach, acknowledging that while the notion of societal, grand and global challenges now drives, inspires and justifies an increasing number of policy instruments, initiatives and priorities, neither the concept nor the organisational models of challenge-driven R&I policy are anywhere near a crystallised and stabilised state. Hence, the rhetoric and practice of challenge-driven R&I policies, on one hand, and the analytical frameworks to understand and sustain them, on the other, are in a process of co-evolvement, obfuscating any simple distinction between theory and practice, and between descriptive adequacy and normative intervention.

The aim of this special issue is twofold: (a) to deepen our understanding of the evolution of the concept of “grand challenges” in policy discourse, and (b) to identify and discuss implications for policy design, operationalisation and analysis.

We invite in particular papers which combine conceptual or theoretical contributions with empirical evidence or comparative analyses. Given that the “grand challenge” orientation is inherently linked with future strategies and policies, we also encourage papers which apply a forward-looking approach in their analysis and discussions. Papers may come from diverse fields (such as political science, social science, organisational science) and relate to different debates within and beyond the research and innovation policy community.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • The meaning of the "grand challenges" concept and its relation with earlier policy developments
  • The politics of the emergence of the concept in policy discourse
  • Changes and implications for policy making and the operationalisation of policies
  • Implications for policy design and analysis, i.e.
    • in the form of assessments, for example, of current approaches as the "innovation system" approach for understanding developments,
    • or in the form of key issues, dimensions and tensions examined with a forward-looking approach that may have an essential bearing on this particular type of challenge-driven R&I policy orientation

Call for papers: "Advanced IT and Security Services in the Internet of Things Environment"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Services Technology and Management.

Unlike the current internet, IoT means a new network space in which all things around the world can be connected, including humans. It has the ability and intelligence to send/receive information with the benefit of multiple data processing.

In this environment, people can be provided with various convergence services through the intelligent collaborative process between physical things surrounding humans, with minimal spatial/temporal constraints. Autonomous convergence service can be provided, since the context of the user is recognised in the IoT environment. It is expected that the IoT market will grow to a value of 3,090 billion dollars by 2020, as it grows by 30% per year.

However, the possibility exists that various types of information can be easily exposed in the process of resource binding among the things required to compose the services in the current computing environment. In order to pre-emptively respond to these risks and provide a sustainable IoT environment and reliable services, it is necessary to study the advanced convergence of security services.

The main aim of this special issue is therefore to bring together researchers and practitioners working in related fields in advanced IT and security services in the IoT environment. The purpose of the issue is to present the latest research and propose strategies for the development direction of research into guiding advanced IT and security services in the IoT environment.

Socialising with the web of things

Are you Facebook friends with your microwave oven, is your car? Does your washing machine have a blog read by the tumble drier? Ever thought of following your lighting circuit on Twitter, would it make sense to have the electric curtain controllers do so? Well, such whimsical ideas are perhaps a little far-fetched at first glance. There are some precedents. One might follow a movie and TV streaming site on Twitter and use a connection tool to automatically control what output you record for later viewing on the TV but only if a web review site you also follow gives it a five-star review perhaps. You might even have a link between the items you flag as good or bad that then filter into Facebook updates, as many people do with the music they listen to on Spotify. The combinations seem limitless.

More mundane applications involving the lighting and heating in your home exist that allow you to have the thermostat switch on the heating before you come home either when you send it a text but also perhaps when a weather update from twitter forecasts snow. The Internet of Things is with us already as more and more domestic and other devices are hooked up to the internet and so their sensors and readouts become accessible via a web browser or to other software and apps on your smart phone become the norm for controlling a wide range of gadgets.

The next step is the development of a “social internet of things” that allows people and their gadgets to be more coherently connected. Writing in the International Journal of Web Based Communities, computer scientists Bruno Cabral, Cibele Vasconcelos and Cássio Prazeres of the Federal University of Bahia, in Brazil, recognize that we now use online social networks as a surrogate and as a supplement to many of the activities we once were able only to do offline without digital assistance. As the internet of things evolves, there is the potential to bring together this world and to use it to enhance and make more efficient our use of refrigerators, microwave ovens, TVs, cars, cell phones and other devices to improve quality of life.

Prazeres and colleagues suggest that in some circumstances and for many applications, the people will not even be needed, our gadgets will interact through the infrastructures of social networks without our input. One would hope, of course, that automatic thermostats listening to the weather forecast on twitter and checking up on your business trip schedule would not override the logic of not turning on the air conditioning in an empty house. Online tools such as IFTTT, which stands for “IF this, THEN that”, allows users to connect web applications, their smart phone, online social networks and a range of cloud services and some networked devices, such as the aforementioned lighting and heating.

The team has taken this several steps further in developing an architecture for what they refer to as a “social web of things”, which provides the potential means for us to interact with our devices in a naturalistic manner, not dissimilar to our online social networking interactions with people. This anthromorphizing of connected appliances gives us an instantly comprehensible interface, so that one might message the house thermometers to get the temperature and then tell the thermostats to switch on the heating on our command. But, the same architecture could then be extended to remove the intermediate, us, from the equation and so give us domestic bliss with minimal intervention on our part.

Two life hacks to boost business

Two simple life hacks that might apply to all kinds of situations, business, social life, even family life, emerge from a new study published in the International Journal of Organisational Design and Engineering.

The first is:

“Use face-to-face where possible instead of email and in long-distance collaboration use technologies such as desktop video conferencing”

The second is:

“Make each email count, only sending emails when needed and to whom who needs to know”

The life hacks emerge from a study of social networking in a team working in the high-tech industry carried out by Stori Lynn Hybbeneth of Cisco, in Englewood, Colorado, Dirk Brunnberg of Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen, Germany and Peter Gloor of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Their study revealed structural holes and bottlenecks, stress among overburdened individuals, and isolation among others. The resulting social networking analysis offers a new perspective on identifying the best network structures to allow people to work more effectively and increase their job satisfaction and is something of a blueprint for SNA-based organizational redesign and optimization, the researchers report.

Social network analysis (SNA) follows a longer tradition in social science and long predates, the modern phenomenon of online social networking with which most people are now familiar. In recent years, it has climbed down from the academic “ivory tower” and become a useful tool improving productivity and staff well-being in the workplace. “Research in the field of organizational science confirms that using teams and work groups as units of analysis for knowledge intensive work leads to profound insights,” Hybbeneth and colleagues say.

The researchers in carrying out an analysis of a month’s worth of communications at a high-tech company first made the assumptions that improved collaboration between teams will increase the ability to scale and improve efficiency as critical information is shared. They also took it as read that improved team collaboration between different teams will improve key metrics. Additionally, different collaboration tools were known to produce different levels of team cohesiveness and that some individuals are more central to the team than others with different types of collaborative ties creating different social networks.

“We found that it is really quality of communication that matters. Just spamming team members with information consumes valuable ‘information processing cycles’,” Hybbeneth and colleagues say. “The people in highest demand need to transfer some of their knowledge into more permanent repositories than email,” the researchers add. “While one can never share enough knowledge, it really matters how it is done, we envision a future where there is much more information pull than push.” However, they also recognize that this will require a paradigm shift in sharing behavior that has been the norm for at least the last two decades. Nevertheless, the researchers are convinced that companies, organizations and other collaborative groups that adopt their two life hacks – less email, more face-to-face – will see efficiency, productivity and well-being improve.

An electric drive in the country

Electric vehicles in towns and cities are not the answer to pollution problems and climate change, but they might help country folk reduce their carbon bootprints. Researchers in the UK are questioning the received wisdom regarding the promotion of electric vehicles in towns and cities. Writing in the International Journal of Automotive Technology and Management, they suggest that the evidence of benefits in terms of energy usage and emissions points to electric vehicle use in sub-urban and rural settings as being much stronger.

Peter Wells, a professor in the Logistics and Operations Management section of Cardiff Business School at Cardiff University, UK, and colleagues Paul Nieuwenhuis and Daniel Newman, working with engineers Ceri Donovan and Huw Davies, are questioning the drive to establish electric vehicles as an alternative to the internal combustion engine for cities. Their findings based on case study information from electric vehicle trials under the ENEVATE research programme into drivers of electric vehicles, suggests that the transition away from conventional vehicles only has strong benefits when usage is intense. This, they found, is not viable in urban areas with the exception of light delivery and service vehicles.

The study covers North West Europe and the team’s interpretation of the data points to a need to shift the focus from towns and cities and to convert rural and sub-urban drivers more stridently to electric vehicles. The nature of urban driving means that too many of the advantages of electric vehicles over petrol and diesel are lost by the very nature of driving involved in this environment.

However, the team finds an important caveat to electric vehicle use even in rural areas. While domestic fuel poverty affects some four million households in the UK, who must spend more than 10% of their income on powering their homes, this figure is dwarfed by the 21 million households that spend over 10% on transportation. Electric vehicles are currently a lot more costly than conventional vehicles, which means less affluent citizens in rural areas must continue to use conventional vehicles or face social exclusion. The team suggests that any policy change that penalises traditional drivers without offering an adequate replacement will affect poorer country dwellers significantly.

That said, the team also gleaned from the driver data that electric vehicles can serve the needs of users with travel needs more diverse and unpredictable than the simple urban commute or shopping trips. The team points out that from the technical and thermodynamics perspective, non-urban commuter ranges are typically those that are ideally suited to the capacity of the typical electric vehicle with perhaps 30 to 80 km round trips. This fits much more snugly with the discharge-recharge cycle of an electric vehicle’s battery rather than the endless stop-start of countless short urban journeys. Moreover, non-urban dwellings more often than not have exterior space on which a vehicle can be safely parked while its batteries are recharged from the home’s domestic supply, something that would be untenable for people in towns and cities with distant or restricted parking. Additionally, the average speeds of non-urban roads are commonly more suited to efficient driving of an electric vehicle, not accounting for fast motorways and low speed limit urban routes.

“Electric vehicles are said to be suited to urban applications because they have zero emissions at point of use, are relatively quiet in operation, do not require power when stationary (i.e., due to traffic congestion) and have reasonable acceleration,” the researchers report. Their study suggests the electric vehicle revolution should more appropriately be taking place in the countryside and the suburbs rather than our towns and cities.

Whither the Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things – IoT – it’s a phrase we hear more and more, often hyped, often discussed seriously in the context of cloud computing but definitely a buzz phrase. Put simply, it is the connection of “smart” (and otherwise) devices, washing machines, refrigerators, scanners and printers, health monitoring devices, environmental sensors, earthquake and tsunami early warning systems, and much more to the Internet so that they can provide a service as a whole, being accessed, calibrated and controlled remotely from a browser window or mobile device.

The concept behind the Internet of Things is succinctly encapsulated in the phrase “ubiquitous computing” coined by the late Mark Weiser in 1988. Weiser was a chief scientist at Xerox PARC until his untimely death at the age of just 47 years in April 1999. One has to wonder about his legacy, isn’t it about time the IoT came of age?

Salvatore Sorce and Antonio Gentile of the Università degli Studi di Palermo, Italy, have been longing for an IoT for many years and wondering why they as computer engineers are not yet benefiting from its substantial promise. They believe there are three perspectives that have to be taken on the concept – interaction media, device integration and applications – to explain the time lag between Weiser’s original postulate and the realization of its potential.

Weiser originally said, “The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it.” Which in one sense was pre-empted by Arthur C Clarke’s third law of prediction: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” We don’t, of course, need anything supernatural or mystical to bring about ubiquitous computing we just need dedication to the cause, killer apps and a way to bring it all together. But, it is this combination that we have not seen.

Sorce and Gentile have reviewed the state-of-the-art in ubiquitous computing, the Internet of Things. There is a lot of effort being expended in developing technologies. Unfortunately, there remain significant obstacles even with advances in connectivity: connecting the existing cell phone networks to power line networks, the internet and smart phones themselves to allow users whether domestic, academic or industrial to access an interface to use the “things” transparently is not yet possible. When they talk about a standardized, universal connector and yet all manufacturers make them different sizes and to different specifications (take phone chargers, headphone jacks and USB itself as the prime and obvious domestic examples) it perhaps becomes obvious on one level why we don’t have a simple interface that tells the washing machine in your apartment to delay the noisy spin cycle until after you’ve finished watching your movie stream, for instance, and adds washing powder to the online supermarket order without disturbing you when you’re showering later.

There are surely killer apps of that sort waiting to happen once the connectivity is possible and I am sure this naive example has scenarios of much greater significance and impact in everyday’s life. When we start to hear about something a little more worthwhile than a shopping-enabled refrigerator, perhaps we will then also hear about Weiser’s ubiquitous legacy becoming a real thing.

In the face of accelerated change and genuine uncertainties in the business environment, scenario planning has come to occupy a key position within strategic management, so much so that it is now part and parcel of many corporate foresight exercises.

The current interest in scenario planning results from two key drivers. First, organisations want to understand the potential implications of new business models and emerging technological trajectories, and to overcome the limits on their ability to prepare for the unknown future. Second, empirical evidence suggests scenario planning could lead to desirable organisational outcomes such as adaptive learning, ambidexterity, innovation and improved decision making. Increasingly aware of the benefits of scenario planning, a growing number of organisations support and conduct scenario planning exercises periodically, with calls on managers to integrate them into their organisational processes.

The purpose of this special issue, therefore, is to explore scenario planning for the creation and capture of sustainable value relevant to competitiveness.

Conceptual, qualitative and quantitative contributions are invited. Cross-disciplinary contributions and those from multiple theoretical perspectives are particularly welcome.

Call for papers: "Behaviour of Composite Laminates under Severe Conditions"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Automotive Composites.

At present, composite laminates are being used in a large number of applications where they are required to perform safely while being exposed to severe conditions such as impact, crashes, fatigue, fire, etc. The applications range from aerospace structures to boats and several kinds of ground vehicles including sports cars, busses and railway carriages, to name a few.

In these and many other engineering applications, laminates made of composite materials operating under adverse conditions are expected to have the necessary load carrying capacity to complete their missions without failure. However, many composites such as carbon fibre-reinforced plastics demonstrate brittle material behaviour and low thermal resistance, making them susceptible to failure under operational conditions.

This makes it important to understand composite laminate behaviour and modes of failure when subjected to dynamic, environmental and/or thermal loads stemming from impact, crashes, fire, etc. Such loads may lead to failure by delamination, fragmentation and fatigue, among other things. Due to the complex nature of composites, an understanding of their macroscopic behaviour requires experimental, computational and analytical tools, with the presence of severe conditions adding another level of complexity to gaining a full understanding of the problems associated with their mechanical and physical behaviour.

This special issue aims at bringing together studies on the simulation and analysis of composite laminates operating under adverse loading conditions with the objective of understanding the relevant failure modes and formulating reliable design tools. These studies will be of interest to a large number of researchers, engineers and designers using composites in a wide range of engineering applications.

Call for papers: "Energy Supply Chains: The Future Role of Maritime Industry"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics.

Energy supply chains are more extended and complex that ever before. Increasing demand for energy, mainly stemming from Asia and other emerging markets, has forced governments and enterprises around the world to adapt aggressive exploration strategies leading to heavy investments in infrastructure and distribution networks. Projects related to offshore drilling, storage facilities and extended transportation networks worth billions of USD are currently in place. The associated challenges and risks from production all the way to consumption are not to be neglected since they are spread across the different stages of the supply chain.

The maritime industry has played a critical role in energy supply chains ever since it began acting as the link between different nodes of the chain. It has managed to adapt to different industry needs by continuously innovating in terms of vessel types and new technologies. With fossil fuels being the main source of energy, the maritime industry has managed to accommodate the needs of the different supply chains of coal (i.e. OBO), crude oil (i.e. VLCC) and gas (i.e. LNG). In addition, the need to meet increasing demand has forced companies to seek more and more offshore solutions with drill-ships and FPSOs facilitating such operations. Finally, new types of energy such as shale gas are putting new challenges forward in terms of infrastructure, distribution and network design solutions.

This special issue aims to collect recent original contributions related to the future role of the maritime industry in energy supply chains. It will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at the 2015 International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) Conference, as well as at the 3rd International Conference on Transportation Information and Safety (ICTIS). However, we also strongly encourage researchers who are unable to participate in any of the above conferences to submit papers for this call.

Healthy knowledge management

Social network analysis could improve knowledge sharing in the healthcare sector, according to research results published in the International Journal of Collaborative Enterprise.

Elizabeth Cudney, Steven Corns and Suzanna Long in the department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, in Rolla, Missouri, USA, explain how knowledge management systems (KMS) can be critical in capturing, retaining and communicating project results and staff knowledge. They can prevent knowledge drain and provide training as “lessons learned” following specific occurrences and the resolution of particular problems the staff face.

The team has focused on the development of a KMS using social network analysis (SNA) to see how this combination might improve methods for organizing and sharing knowledge within a large government healthcare organization. They identified the key people involved using a narrative approach to interview in focus groups formed from those who were early adopters of process improvement methods. This allowed them to understand how changes to the work environment and procedures were perceived. The results from this preliminary work then allowed the team to devise a Likert-style questionnaire, named for American administrator and organizational psychologist Rensis Likert who worked at the US Department of Agriculture in the 1940s. This questionnaire was then given to all users to help the team assimilate a broad perspective on how social networking affects knowledge sharing.

They performed a social networking mapping and analysis to characterize the relationships between the various players and the knowledge links between them. They found that improvements could be made if individuals identified by many members of staff were to form a tight, core, network of their own. This would rapidly increase the ability to disseminate information on projects because this core of individuals would all have many people in their own networks.

They also found that improvements in KMS abound if the “early adopters” also form a core network as they could disseminate new ideas much more rapidly too. An additional conclusion from the work is that if technical assistance is provided early this better facilitates the creation of connections for sharing information and networking opportunities. The team adds that as with education, a higher level of engagement and stimulation makes the system that much easier for the personnel involved to benefit from the information in the system.

“While these recommendations apply specifically to this healthcare organization, these recommendations are applicable for improving knowledge sharing in any large organization regardless of industry,” the team concludes.

Call for papers: "HRM Implementation Effectiveness in Europe"

For a special issue of the European Journal of International Management.

We know from various studies that the implementation of human resource management is an important factor for the performance, quality and effectiveness of HRM (Gratton & Truss, 2003; Guest & Bos-Nehles, 2013; Huselid, Jackson & Schuler, 1997). Some scholars even go a step further in stating that even well-designed HRM practices will eventually become ineffective when they are not properly implemented (e.g. Khilji & Wang, 2006).

This thematic issue is inspired by the need for more research on HRM implementation effectiveness (Becker & Huselid, 2006; Guest, 2011; Guest & Bos-Nehles, 2013). Although some fundamental scholarly work has been done to date (e.g. the special issue on “Human Resource Management and the Line” in Human Resource Management, 2013), we call for expanding this research stream to explore HRM implementation effectiveness further.

The aim of this issue is to explore HRM implementation effectiveness in the international arena and examine its various mechanisms and contextual factors. The quality of HRM practices developed in headquarters; the relationship between the headquarters and the subsidiary; the relationship between line managers, employees and HR professionals; the impact of cross-cultural and -national relationships; support from HR professionals in how to implement HRM practices; (in)consistency of HRM practices within local and national cultures; or leadership styles of managers in different countries or cultures – these are but few examples of factors that might affect the way line managers implement HRM practices in an international context.

We welcome papers with methodological diversity. Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Comparative HRM implementation effectiveness: how effective are various HRM stakeholders in implementing HRM practices in various countries (e.g. comparative implementation techniques, comparative stakeholder involvement, comparative effectiveness criteria, etc.)?
  • Effects of internationalisation on HRM implementation effectiveness (e.g. integration vs. local responsiveness of implementation policies in MNCs, international best practices in HRM implementation effectiveness)
  • Cross-cultural influences on HRM implementation effectiveness: how does culture influence the effectiveness of HRM implementation (e.g. how is "effectiveness" defined in various cultures? Which factors influence the implementation of HRM in various cultures?)?
  • The effect of leadership styles on HRM implementation effectiveness: which leadership style leads to the most effective HRM implementation (e.g. cross-cultural or international leadership styles)?
  • Ethical influences on HRM implementation effectiveness: how to measure and compare HRM implementation effectiveness (e.g. is it ethical to measure how effectively line managers implement HRM practices between countries, regions or business units? Ethical perceptions of HRM practices, etc.)
  • The effect of line manager-employee and line manager-HR professional relationships on HRM implementation effectiveness (e.g. the influence of LMX and HRM support)
