The power of crowdfunding

Once upon a time, entrepreneurs and others might seek financial backing for a project from corporate entities, government, grant-awarding bodies, and perhaps even public donations. In the age of online social networking and social media, a new opportunity for raising capital has emerged and has been dubbed crowdfunding.

With the help of crowdfunding, aspiring entrepreneurs can raise money from a large number of ordinary people (the “crowd”). Since crowdfunding is Internet-mediated, it generally involves offering incentives and recruiting donations through social media activities, such as blogging, sharing videos and photos, and perhaps even podcasting. Now, researchers in Germany have investigated how three of the most well-known “Web 2.0” systems – Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn – interact and can be best used to improve the outcome of a crowdfunding campaign.

Kaja Joanna Fietkiewicz, Carina Hoffmann, and Elmar Lins of the Heinrich Heine University, in Düsseldorf, Germany, have focused on the various factors that actually lead to success in a crowdfunding success. Importantly, they point out that the emergence of countless Web 2.0, social media, and social networking websites and applications, and almost certainly the advent of the smartphone have made national boundaries almost transparent. This allows an entrepreneur in one place to reach a global audience.

The researchers have found that it seems that Facebook offers the greatest opportunity for electronic “word-of-mouth” marketing of a campaign whereas LinkedIn and YouTube, which are in several ways more passive online tools than Facebook, offered a different type of eWoM. YouTube can increase interest despite the weak ties between users in contrast to the strong communities on Facebook. Any impact of LinkedIn a crowdfunding campaign seems to rely on priming via Facebook and/or YouTube.

Fundamentally, the team says, “An optimal solution for founders appears to be to focus on the connection of two social media platforms, e.g., Facebook or YouTube for eWoM, and LinkedIn for social capital.” They add that the common assumption that if nobody sees it, it didn’t happen holds true. “A great business-oriented network might be the decisive point for many investors,” they add. Hence, entrepreneurs must either turn to their own network and start the domino effect of eWoM on Facebook, or make an appealing and informative video that will be distributed by those who are not necessarily familiar with the project, but will be interested to see something engaging on YouTube and share their thoughts and perhaps even pledge to the campaign and encourage others to do so also.

Personality traits and Facebook
How does one’s personality correlate with social media use? That was the question researchers in Jordan hoped to answer. They have looked at Facebook use and the big five personality traits in the context of online social networking activity in a developing nation. They demonstrated from a statistical analysis of a small survey of 260 people that the intensity of Facebook activity is negatively affected by three personality traits – neuroticism, agreeableness and conscientiousness. It is positively affected by extraversion. The fifth big trait, openness apparently has no significant effect on activity in the users surveyed. They found that gender was not a barrier to usage, academic level only affected usage positively among neurotic and open people and negatively among conscientious people. Usage was always more than that considered to be addictive behaviour, according to Facebook’s guidelines.
El-Tah, Z.K.R. and Jaradat, M-I.R.M. (2018) ‘The big five personality traits and their relationship with the intensity of using Facebook: a developing country perspective‘, Int. J. Business Information Systems, Vol. 27, No. 4, pp.512-537.

Online hearing loss
As with other walks of life, hearing loss can affect detrimentally the benefits one might gain from audio and video content online. Captioning is a popular mechanism to make audio accessible to the hearing impaired whereas signing might be used in some video contexts. Researchers in India are developing a novel visual aid that could allow the hearing impaired to “see” the audio in a video. The tool produces a speech synchronised visual lip movement sequence for a video. The lip movement sequence is then superimposed onto and displayed along with the original video. The team has successfully tested feasibility and usefulness of this novel tool.
Bhat, C. and Kopparapu, S.K. (2018) ‘Usable technology for the differently abled-hearing impairment‘, Int. J. Humanitarian Technology, Vol. 1, No. 1, pp.3-18.

Trade and health
The effects of trade on public health have been investigated by researchers in the USA. They have looked at data spanning the period 1965-2013 and look at international trade and life expectancy in 25 less-developed countries. Their analysis suggests that international trade and life expectancy have a positive long-run relationship, however it could be a bidirectional correlation in terms of cause and effect. In other words, it might be that more international trade means longer life expectancy or vice versa, that people living longer leads to greater international trade. In light of this, the team suggests that policies should be implemented in these countries that promote trade and quality of life, simultaneously.
Palamuleni, M.L. (2017) ‘Trade openness and life expectancy nexus in less-developed countries‘, Int. J. Trade and Global Markets, Vol. 10, No. 4, pp.290-302.

Renewables renewed
There appears to be a causal relationship between the use of renewable energy sources and environmental indicators. For instance, great renewable use points to reduced effects of climate change, human toxicity, respiratory impact, ionising radiation, freshwater eutrophication, marine eutrophication, freshwater ecotoxicity, land use, and mineral and fossil resource depletion. According to research from Spain this applies to developed and developing nations. In other words, we should be focusing efforts on renewable energy sources for their benefits in terms of climate change and other environmental effects.
Márquez-Ramos, L. (2018) ‘The environmental impact of renewables‘, Int. J. Global Warming, Vol. 14, No. 2, pp.143-158.

Ethical tourism
Tourism can have a serious detrimental impact on the environment. Air travel aside, most of the effects are localised and might be ameliorated by improved sympathetic infrastructure and design. Indeed, there are efforts at the local, national and even international level to reduce the effects of tourism. Environmental responsibility is important to such efforts and must become an incontrovertible part of the modern tourism industry, suggests research published by researchers from Greece.
“The role of environmental responsibility in tourism” in J. Int Business Entrepreneurship Dev, 2018, 11, 30-39; DOI: 10.1504/JIBED.2018.10005608

Human waste risk

Human waste is rich with bacteria and other pathogens some of which can cause serious illness in the vulnerable – the elderly, immuno-compromised, and infants, among others. A study of Escherichia coli from human waste can cause serious diarrhoea in small children, for instance. A study of indiscriminate waste dumps in informal settlements is the subject of recent research. The work shows that soil from these sites contains many types of pathogenic E coli, all of which represent a public health risk, especially to vulnerable groups and in the present work the under fives. “It is imperative that local government authorities take a collective leading role in combating the spread of indiscriminate dumping to prevent waste-dump exposure, specifically as ecological reservoirs of DEC pathogens in urban informal settlements,” the researchers assert.
“An ecological study of diarrhoeagenic E.coli associated with indiscriminate waste dumps and under five diarrhoea in six informal settlements in Durban, eThekwini Municipality, South Africa” in Int. J. Environ. Waste Manage., 2018, 20, in press; DOI: 10.1504/IJEWM.2017.090056

Medical watermarking

Watermarking can improve data protection and content enrichment. This is as true in the medical domain as anywhere. Indeed, watermarking can validate a medical image and link it incontrovertibly to the patient and their medical records. Researchers in Tunisia have now developed an adaptive watermarking system using a wavelets-based human visual system (HVS) and a fuzzy inference system (FIS) to embed a digital watermark. The resulting watermark is indelible and yet imperceptible except in instances when it needs to be recovered from the medical image. The team explains that their tests show the watermark to be easy to implement and to resist deliberate attempts at removal including JPEG compression, Gaussian noise, Gaussian blur, median filtering and rotation.
“Watermarking medical images with patient identification to verify authenticity” in Int. J. Med. Eng. Informat., 2018, 10, in press; DOI: 10.1504/IJMEI.2018.090087

You can tell me by the way I walk

Computers can recognise all kinds of biometric patterns – fingerprints, iris, lipstick traces, and more. One particular biometric that would be useful in forensic investigations and for security applications would be recognition of an individual based on how they walk, their gait. There are efficient gait templates that can pin down the features of a person’s gait and might then be used in recognition. However, there is much to develop before computers can unambiguously recognise a person from the gait. Researchers in Iran have taken a step forward along this path and devised a novel template feature, which they refer to as gait salient image. This, they suggest could improve gait recognition significantly. “GSI: efficient spatio-temporal template for human gait recognition” in Int. J. Biometr., 2018, 10, in press; DOI: 10.1504/IJBM.2018.090127

Intellectual inclusion
Children with intellectual disability often have problems in responding effectively to their environment and commonly show a strong dependence on physical materials. Tangible technologies could be used to improve learning through experience suggest researchers from Brazil. However, the benefits of the educational opportunities created by these modes of interaction and feedback need further research to allow novel and supportive systems to be designed for such children. The researchers have developed ten guidelines for the development of tangible environments that can increase inclusivity for children with learning difficulties.
Pontual Falcão, T. (2017) ‘Action-effect mappings in tangible interaction for children with intellectual disabilities’, Int. J. Learning Technology, Vol. 12, No. 4, pp.294–314.

Emotions through the prism
Researchers in The Netherlands have developed EmotionPrism, a tool for designers to gain a better understanding of particular positive emotions and their expressive qualities. Differentiating positive emotions (e.g., joy, love, hope, and interest) and having an awareness of associated expressive interaction qualities (e.g., playful, careful, persistent and focused interaction) can support designers to influence users’ interactions in a favourable way, the researchers suggest. The tool itself is a collection of movie-sets that represents 25 different positive emotions in dynamic hand-object interactions, combined with theoretical descriptions of the emotions, these can be used to focus product design. Differentiating positive emotions (e.g., joy, love, hope, and interest) and having an awareness of associated expressive interaction qualities (e.g., playful, careful, persistent and focused interaction) is key to positive development.
Yoon, J., Pohlmeyer, A.E. and Desmet, P.M.A. (2017) ‘EmotionPrism: a design tool that communicates 25 pleasurable human-product interactions’, J. Design Research, Vol. 15, Nos. 3/4, pp.174–196.

Sex and gender in the SME
A new study from Italy examines the influence of decision-makers’ characteristics, such as biological sex and stereotypical gender roles, on how they make international decisions in the context of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Given the growing importance of SMEs in globalization it is critical to understand the equality and inclusivity issues surrounding management and staff in such companies. Part of the urge to gain deeper understanding begins with looking at sex and gender and their purported impact on decision making. Results of the study suggest, for example, that managers and entrepreneurs with masculine traits, regardless of gender, are likely to make wider use of formalised decision-making processes and to assume a more structured hierarchy. Moreover, among the stereotypical gender roles, only masculinity showed a relationship with the dimensions of strategic decision-making processes. The results show that women have a greater ability to involve the organisation members in making decisions, regardless of formalism or hierarchy.
Francioni, B., Musso, F. and Cioppi, M. (2017) ‘International decision processes within SMEs: the influence of biological sex and stereotypical gender roles’, Int. J. Globalisation and Small Business, Vol. 9, No. 4, pp.203–221.

Emoji tests
Animated characters can be used to represent human emotion and thus be used as tags when people are self-reporting in a wide variety of research contexts about their wellbeing, mental health, and emotional state. 14 characters that represent desire/love, satisfaction/approval, pride/self-esteem, hope/optimism, interest/curiosity, surprise/excitement, disgust/aversion, embarrassment/shyness, fear/shock and boredom/dullness, as well as joy/happiness and contempt/disrespect, have been tested by researchers from The Netherlands. The animations offer a useful non-verbal communication tool through which researchers can collect data from users. Data from the present study on how well recognized were the emotions being conveyed by the animations allowed the researchers to fine-tune the animations and improve their efficacy.
Laurans, G. and Desmet, P.M.A. (2017) ‘Developing 14 animated characters for non-verbal self-report of categorical emotions’, J. Design Research, Vol. 15, Nos. 3/4, pp.214–233.
