Call for papers: "Applications of Marketing Science in Asian Countries"

For a special issue of the Asian Journal of Management Science and Applications.

Dynamic multiculturalism continues to be a vital aspect of global marketing that affects consumers and businesses around the world. This special issue aims at focusing on the emergence of Asian countries as one of the leading markets in the global economy, and the associated application of marketing science that makes Asian countries an exciting opportunity for marketing practices today. There are numerous reasons to bring out the special issue for which the time is now opportune. The advent of research on emerging markets is increasing, especially in the Asian countries. Recent research within the last two decades (e.g., Sheth 2011; Gu, Hung, and Tse 2008; Hitt et al. 2000; Hoskisson et. al., 2000) have highlighted the challenges and excitement in the application of marketing science in the context of emerging markets. However, the marketing literature with a focus on Asian markets is still emerging (e.g., Jaikumar and Sarin, 2015; Mishra et al., 2015; Tat et al., 2015; Singh et al.,2015; Singh & Das, 2013). Moreover, the gross domestic product of the emerging markets will take over that of advanced markets by 2035 (Wilson and Purushothaman 2003). This issue emphasises the need for educators and business leaders to recognise, appreciate, and understand the significance of the application of marketing science in the Asian environment including different cultures and cross-cultural business practices, as they affect both domestic and multinational marketing strategies.

Both conceptual (or theoretical) papers, as well as empirical papers, are welcome, and the special issue is also agnostic to any method or methodologies that may be used by contributing authors.

The issue will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at the National Marketing Conference, but we also strongly encourage researchers unable to participate in the conference to submit articles for this call.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • Research methods in marketing

Call for papers: "Industrial Engineering Models for Business Excellence"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Business Excellence.

The application of scientific management philosophies plays a vital role for business excellence in both service and manufacturing industries. However, the companies face challenges in designing a systematic management structure to strive for operational excellence. Though they are involved in the development of business growth models and creating solutions to the problems in the company, it appears that there is no coherent management plan to maximise the benefits. People are not connected enough to the larger business needs. The management infrastructure is unable to change to stay competitive. Therefore, the companies are restructuring operations and adopting world-class practices in their bid to expand profits and become competitive globally. The ‘organisational intelligence’ that calls for the integration of various industrial engineering principles, models, techniques and algorithms is essential for operational excellence. This would facilitate the sustainable improvement of key performance metrics. Hence it is necessary to explore the use of such methodologies to leverage operations for business growth.

The issue will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at International Conference on Advances in Industrial Engineering Applications (ICAIEA2018), but we also strongly encourage researchers unable to participate in the conference to submit articles for this call.

Call for papers: "Clean Energy: Innovation in Policy, Management and Praxis"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Technology Intelligence and Planning.

This special issue aims to conceptualise how technology that permits to generate energy from renewable sources (i.e. clean energy) is embedded in policy goals, policy design, planning and implementation at all levels. The objective is to receive contributions that draw on available and emergent technological solutions for clean energy, but focus on the range of policy and governance issues related to expansion of utilisation of renewable energy sources (RES). To reiterate, rather than discuss technology that underpins the use of RES, the objective is to highlight the drivers, policy approaches, governance issues and management problems related to the reduction of dependency on fossil fuels. These issues and topics can be discussed at the level of a firm, a local community, a region and the national economy.

The targeted readership includes both academics and practitioners. Among academics there will be those with technical and engineering background who are interested in emerging technologies in the clean energy field, and how these technologies are linked with policy-making. Other academics will include those who are more on the policy, strategy or governance side, i.e. researchers in the business schools focusing on management issues. Practitioners are likely to be interested in case studies on implementation of clean energy solutions and specific solutions in management (e.g. at the firm level) and governance. An attraction for both academics and practitioners is the international experience in the clean energy field that will be concentrated in a special issue. Furthermore, the international experience of industrialised and transitional nations will attract international readership.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • Energy security through the lens of clean energy (i.e. energy from renewable sources)
  • Clean energy: emergent trends, solutions, the interlinks between technology and policy
  • Policy regarding renewable energy sources (RES)
  • Reduction of dependency on fossil fuels: drivers, critical success factors, policy and governance issues

Electronic health records can contain information about hospital visits, test results, surgical history, eating and drinking habits, sexuality, allergies, medications, psychological profiles, and other personal information that is useful to your physician and healthcare workers but might also be exploited by cybercriminals. Keeping the keys to your health records safe is just as important when it comes to your privacy as it is for securing your home. Now, researchers from Germany and Nigeria have worked together to develop a bio-cryptographic system that can ensure patient privacy by using a very personal key – a biometric that is used to lock up the data.

Pollinating problems
An algorithm that solves non-linear equations by mimicking the way in which flowers are pollinated has been developed by researchers in Egypt and Yemen. The algorithm provides a way to quickly address complex scientific and engineering problems involving such equations, which usually do not succumb to anything but the brute force calculating power of supercomputers, such as fluid flow, macromolecular simulations, fracturing of structural materials and even weather and climate forecasting. The technique avoids the common pitfall of other algorithms whereby the answer to a question gets trapped in the local energy minimum of the possible solutions.

Nutty chocolate
A lactose free and entirely vegetarian chocolate product is being formulated by scientists in Brazil using macadamia nuts. The product not only offers a new option for chocolate lovers but exploits the fact that São Mateus, located in the State of Espirito Santo is the second largest producer of macadamia nuts. However, surprisingly initial tests of the market niche for such a product were not positive but point to a need to sell to specialty stores rather than the general public. Given that there is a large number of lactose intolerant people in the population of Brazil, the team suggests there is a niche market that might be opened to macadamia chocolate nevertheless.

Ant transportation
It might be possible to make safer the transportation of dangerous goods by following the methods used by ants to build their colonies. A model of an ant colony forms the basis of a logistics method for deciding which routes are to be used by transporters of such goods, according to research from China. The researchers involved explain that transport networks for dangerous goods are complicated and that there are many uncertainties involved in their use that must be considered in a risk assessment. Their optimized model of a dangerous goods transport network was established with an ant colony algorithm that can be coupled with geographic information to construct a visual optimization platform to reduce risks and make the transportation of such goods safer and more efficient.

Call for papers: "Value Delivery Networks in Indian Context"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Supply Chain and Operations Resilience.

The value delivery network in India is currently encountering a profound period of change. Currently Indian industries experience a chronical overcapacity and owners are constantly in trouble to capture demand. Globalisation and technological innovation are creating a dynamic network or chain of interconnected players to bring and deliver value in form of offerings to the customers, often known as value delivery network or supply chain. Such networks mostly comprise of a number of players in which a firm, whether manufacturing or service, holds the key to creating and offering values in terms of output to its customers (Mentzer, 2001). This notion of value creation and exchange is the foundation stone of the thought of Relationship Marketing which has developed and has been identified as a strategic approach leading all marketing activities towards establishing, developing, and maintaining effective relational exchanges (Morgan & Hunt, 1994). The emergent role of global supply chains was associated with increased interconnectedness among suppliers and manufacturers, which led to higher dependency among firms in the supply chains and a higher level of supply chain complications (Christopher et al., 2011; Blackhurst et al., 2005; Wagner and Bode, 2006; Stecke and Kumar, 2009). This, in turn, leads to supply chains that are proficient during stable business environments but are highly susceptible to risks and disruptions. Global supply chains are mounting in both length and complexity (Blackhurst et al. 2005). Supply chain management is considered as a strategic factor for growing organizational effectiveness and better attainment of organisational goals such as greater competitiveness, superior customer service and improved profitability (Gunasekaran et al. 2001).

From the above, it follows that Value Delivery Network is an important and topical area; and that the Supply and Operations Management research community has an important role to play in work that helps in delivering value. Significant contributions have been made to the Supply Chain literature in recent years but there is scope for much further research that not only develops the theory base on Supply Chain and Value Delivery but also empirically develops the field, learns from and delineates Supply chain and Value Delivery from related strategies and phenomena.

The objective of this special issue is to provide a forum for work that progresses the field of Value Delivery Networks in India practically and theoretically. Thus, a strong focus beyond the organisational level is required to explore, explain, develop, and test aspects of value delivery network.

The issue will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at 4th International Management Conference (http://imc.fiib.edu.in/), and we also strongly encourage researchers unable to participate in the conference to submit articles for this call.

Research Picks Extra – August 2017

Birth rights
In many places, people conceived with artificial reproductive technology have a right to know their origins in terms of genetic and biological parents. In instances where someone other than a person who will take care of the child has been involved either as a surrogate mother for the gestation or in providing genetic material, then there are issues not only of biology, genetics but biography to consider too. Ludovica Poli of the Department of Law, at the University of Turin, Italy, explores the legal foundations of the right to genetic and biographic origins under international law and envisages possible principles to be applied in balancing it with other competing interests.

Aircraft emissions
Air pollution in and around airports is a critical issue. But, determining the effects on the local environment and the people live and work there is a complex problem in which meteorology plays a confounding role in any attempt to model the situation with a view to reducing detrimental effects on the environment. Oleksandr Zaporozhets and Kateryna Synylo of the Institute of Environmental Safety, at the National Aviation University, in Kyiv, Ukraine, have reviewed the way in which aircraft emissions and pollutions are analysed and suggest that the most apposite models take into account fuel flow rates, operational periods of engines, the age of the engines and their maintenance as well as ambient temperatures.
Zaporozhets, O. and Synylo, K. (2017) ‘Operational conditions influence on aircraft engine emission and pollution inside the airport’, Int. J. Sustainable Aviation, Vol. 3, No. 1, pp.1–17.

Tourist crime
Rob Mawby of the Rural Security Research Group, at Harper Adams University, in Newport, UK, suggests that it has long been recognised that tourism generates crime. There is considerable evidence, he says, that many tourist resorts suffer higher than average crime rates and that tourists are disproportionately victimised. Moreover, some touristsare themselves the criminals, especially when it comes to public disorder problems. Tourism is thus a double-edged sword for any town or city: it brings money and other benefits but it boosts crime. However, research data is not available to give policymakers are clear perspective of the pros and cons and he offers a way to remedy this problem. “Only by collecting data in a more rigorous and systematic way can appropriate policies be developed and successfully applied, with the aim of reducing crime and disorder in tourist destinations and crime against tourists. This, in turn, will benefit visitors, local residents and the tourist industry,” he concludes.
Mawby, R.I. (2017) ‘Crime and tourism: what the available statistics do or do not tell us’, Int. J. Tourism Policy, Vol. 7, No. 2, pp.81–92.

Childhood sound perception
A novel musical toy described by scientists in Italy could be used to study sound perception and auditory preferences in young children. The mechanical-electronic device generates sounds depending on how a child plays with the toy and at the same time measures and assesses through sensors and software, exactly how they are responding to those sounds. The device might help musicologists investigate childhood perception of music, but equally could be used in language development studies.

Copyleft, right, left, right…

Copyright is contentious…to say the least. It is at the centre of much debate in academia, in society, and certainly between corporate entities and consumers. Companies’ share price and profits often hinge on the protection of their intellectual property and copyrighted materials whether movies, TV shows, music, photographs, articles and much more. In the age of the Internet, of course, there are few barriers to individuals and organizations breaking copyright law, and in some countries copyright laws are permissive.

From fair use to creative commons to copyright theft and digital downloads, opinions diverge widely. Some see the notion that “sharing is caring” as vital to creativity and even democracy and copyright as nothing but an evil whereas others see all breaches of copyright law as morally, legally and commercially wrong.

Writing in the International Journal of Technology Policy and Law, Julian Hauser of the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, UK, puts forward a moral argument for limiting copyright protection. He argues that today’s expansive copyright laws not only hurt consumers and stifle creativity, but do little to protect content creators and authors.

Hauser puts forward a pared-down version of copyright that he defends as consisting of the right to attribution, the right to have one’s non-endorsement of modifications or uses of one’s work explicitly noted, and the right to a fair share of the profit resulting from the commercial uses of one’s work.

“The significance of copyright can hardly be understated as it shapes one of the defining aspects of our humanity: our culture,” Hauser asserts. “Given these stakes, I have no doubt that copyright will remain a domain of heated debates for many years to come. We need more than that however – we need honest efforts at mutual understanding and constructive criticism.”

Copyright has its roots in laws written three hundred years ago. Maybe it is time for a reboot.

Second-hand opinions

Tracking the Twitter updates of a random sample of 300,000 active users over the course of a month reveals that this particular corner of social media and social networking is not quite as equitable and democratic as popular perception might have us believe. Indeed, the research published in the International Journal of Internet Marketing and Advertising reveals that there is a two-step flow of information through which a minority of users accounts for the majority of influence. Opinion leaders follow other opinion leaders and effectively form a community of influencers within the wider user base and the information they disseminate then follows a power-law distribution as everyday users share, retweet and reuse that information.

Harsha Gangadharbatla of the Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Media Design, College of Media, Communication and Information, at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, and Masoud Valafar a software engineer at Twitter, in San Francisco, California, USA, explain that there are numerous theories about how information is disseminated and how “word-of-mouth” works to influence popular opinion and consumer decision making. There have also been many studies into how the media and social media influencing individuals and groups.

One such theory is known as two-step flow theory. This says that most people form an opinion about a given subject when they are exposed to the views of opinion leaders. Those opinion leaders themselves are influenced by the mass media. This is in contrast to the one-step flow theory, colloquially known as the hypodermic needle, or magic bullet theory, in which people are directly influenced by mass media. Obviously, people are constantly exposed to the mass media at the individual level whether that is television, radio, newspapers or the web. But, the researchers suggest that opinions are actually more likely to be formed second hand in a two-step process. This is especially true of opinions shared on social media but might also apply to the influencers in traditional media – TV pundits, newspaper and magazine columnists, and the like.

It has been claimed that with the wave of new media in the form of Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, and other so-called Web 2.0 sites democratization of information and influence occurred. Gangadharbatla and Valafar suggest that this may not be the case, at least in the Twitter context. Social media is changing radically the way users and consumers receive information, news, opinion, but as with the old vanguard, there still exists the big influencers. These people or organizations, which might include information hubs and news outlets, pressure groups, and even celebrities, act as the primary source of information and opinion.

“Our study suggests that the way information propagates on social media is not all that different from that of traditional media. In other words, even on supposedly democratic and gatekeeper-less environments like Twitter and Instagram, information propagates mostly through opinion leaders, and, more so, these opinion leaders are all connected to other opinion leaders on the medium resulting in a virtual community of opinion leaders that yield a strong influence on how and how fast information spreads on social media,” the team reports. In the business context, the team adds that their, “results suggest that targeting this virtual community of opinion leaders will be a more effective use of advertising dollars than reaching the masses on Twitter.”
