Call for papers: "Family Businesses and their Brand Value"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business.

Family businesses are often passed on over several generations (Kamei and Dana, 2012). Due to their long-term existence, they are often able to develop essential immaterial assets including image, patents, networks or know-how (Craig et al., 2008; Micelotta & Raynard, 2011). Research in family businesses and their transformations over generations has gained an enormous upswing in the last few decades (Aronoff 2004; DeMassis et al., 2008; Llach & Nordquist, 2010; Sharma et al., 2012). Topics such as success factors of succession or coexistence between family and the business and ownership have been intensively analysed, described and discussed (for example in Chua et al., 2003, Chua et al., 2004, Craig & Moores, 2006; Taguiri & Davis, 1996).

The role and influence of brand on company success is an often-discussed topic in the literature (Angulo-Ruiz et al., 2014; Barth et al., 1998; Bell et al., 2002; Breivik & Thorbjornsen, 2008; Chahal & Balu, 2010; Fehle et al., 2008; Tran & Cox 2009). After intensive literature research, it becomes clear that the family business literature is lacking adequate knowledge about handling this within the value-added process (Beck, 2016; Krappe et al., 2011). The consideration of company brand as part of strategic management in family businesses has not, however, gained as much – if any – attention (Krappe et al., 2011).

A brand and its value is an important success factor. Companies with a strong brand are more resistant to price pressures and are in a position to recover quicker from losses in market share (Stöhr, 2004). This is mainly explained by the potential to differentiate from competitors (Kotler & Blieml, 1999; Wallace et al., 2013), which in turn argues for higher market prices (Pindyck & Rubinfeld, 2009) and is saved in the minds of customers (Baumgarth & Meissner, 2010; Bruhn 2004; Schmidt & Vest, 2010). For growing companies, corporate brand may be seen as a relevant factor (Vallaster & Kraus, 2011).

These values are the main elements of a brand, which are in turn essential drivers for the sustainable generation of sales (Romero & Yagüe, 2015). Brand value includes future unrealised profits (Palan, 2012), suggesting that a company can have positive brand value even when cash flows are consistently negative. Subsequently, a brand may be seen as a determinant of future financial success for a firm (King & Newman, 2015), and the relevance of brand within the value chain of the company will in future increase by manifesting in, for example, the management of strategy, mergers and acquisitions, succession planning and valuations (Brinkmann, 2011).

An isolated brand can have considerable value, which can be exploited through strategic plannig for family businesses in the context of capitalisation (e.g. sale-and-lease back or licensing). In the case of succession, a question often raised is which assets and values could be used strategically. (Lopez-Gracia & Sanchez-Andujar, 2007; Salvato & Melin, 2008; Zellweger & Astrachan, 2008;). The value of a brand could be increased by a classical brand extension or brand transfer, whereby the brand name is transferred to new products and services. With the inherent trust in the brand already established, preferences can be assigned to them, thereby adding the additional benefit of entering new market segments (Burman et al., 2012; Esch, 2014; Wong & Merrilees, 2006).

From a theoretical viewpoint, company brand can be characterised under different views:
  • Resource-based view: Under this view, companies with a strong brand can themselves achieve competitive advantage (Glynn, 2009, p. 35). Therefore, it is possible to develop a brand and use it as an intangible resource to increase profitability and to justify higher prices in opposite to consumers (Pawan et al., 2016, p. 553; Proctor, 2000, p. 43). Brands are company-specific and can therefore not be copied by competitors (Beugelsdijk et al., 2013, p. 193), which is especially relevant for family businesses (Beck, 2016, p. 193). For this type of firm, the family itself often constitutes a strong brand characterised by consistency, long-term orientation, integrity and the ability to establish connections to different stakeholders (Krappe et al., 2011; Peters & Fehle, 2011).
  • Knowledge-based view: Here an extension to the definition of brand knowledge can be made. Consumers use their obtained knowledge and their experiences when they compare brands with each other, and this knowledge provides an association to the related brand (Zickermann 2014, p. 38). The positive effects a brand provides for consumers are increasing their influence when using brand marketing (O´Reilly & Lancendorfer, 2015, p. 2156).
  • Network-based view: Here a brand is viewed as an instrument that is in a position to establish connections to feelings, symbols and lifestyles, and these are the reasons why the related products and services are consumed (Verma, 2002, p. 227). Establishing a brand enables the development of relationships to different stakeholders and also affects their behaviour and decisions when co-operating with the company (Basile, 2013, p. 2).
These examples are just potential approaches for utilising brands to guarantee sustainable success and promote growth in family businesses. However, the potential and ability of family businesses to capitalise on their respective company brands has not been investigated. This gap, and the questions surrounding it, will be the topic under investigation in this special issue. This special issue therefore attempts to provide first insights into the potential use of brand value in family businesses, to integrate into the literature on strategic direction and brand value. This is especially the case given that previous efforts by research into the two fields of 'corporate strategy' and 'brand of family' have not, to our knowledge, been amalgamated in any form. This special issue will address this blind spot and invites scholars to make submissions in this upcoming new direction.

Call for papers: "Intelligent Systems for Cyber Security: Current Trends, Applications and New Challenges"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Computational Intelligence Studies.

In the last decades, the cyber domain has played a major role in advancing science and technology. But the interconnection of systems through networks, access to information, different computer technologies and the combination of all these aspects is exposes both academic and industry infrastructures to serious risks. These broadly derive from unauthorised operations or access to computerised platforms without permission of the platform's owner. The consequences of these attacks are almost always invasive and disruptive for the computerised systems, and can be fatal if the attacks are performed in the domain of smart health devices. The need therefore arises to research effective security-based solutions for nullifying these risks or countering the attacks. In recent years, this has been successfully accomplished through the use of intelligent technologies, including artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning solutions. In fact, these have provided valid support in many areas including cyber risk identification, risk assessment of software packages, and preserving security in Internet connections.

Today, intelligent systems for cyber security cover a broad range of areas, including smart cities, cyber-physical systems and critical infrastructures, security of vehicles and implantable medical devices, malware research, cryptography, biometrics, watermarking, human-computer interaction security, security in wireless sensor networks, security in radio-frequency identification, early detection and intervention, and privacy. Given the high academic and industrial impact of researching in these areas for the sake of beneficial effects on society, this special issue will cover basic trends, applications and challenges through theoretical or application-based contributions underlying the construction of secure systems starting from hardware and software and ending at the human-computer interface. Accordingly, it is possible to expect cryptography usage to enable secure interactions. All papers exploring state-of-the-art solutions in the form of extended reviews or advanced research papers are especially welcome.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • Artificial intelligence for cryptography

Call for papers: "Machine Learning in Multi Modality Recognition System"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Intelligent Systems Design and Computing.

The machine learning approach provides a useful tool when the amount of data is very large and a model is not available to explain the generation and relation of the data set. It provides a set of practical applications for solving problems and applying various techniques in automatic data extraction and setting. This technique fills the gap between theory and practice, providing a strong reference for academicians, researchers, and practitioners. Also it covers exploratory as well as predictive modelling, deep and supervised learning, image analysis etc., which form a fruitful branch of machine learning in their own right. This extends beyond the design of non-linear algorithms to encompass also their evaluation, a critical and often neglected area of research, yet a critical stage in practical applications.

This is an ideal platform for researchers to come up with innovative ideas and approaches in the area of machine learning using these applied soft computing strategies. This gains much importance since it directly impacts the real life problem.

The issue will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at the International Conference for Phoenixes on Emerging Current Trends in Engineering and Management (PECTEAM-2018), but we also strongly encourage researchers unable to participate in the conference to submit articles for this call.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • Pattern analysis
  • Pattern recognition
  • Biometrics
  • Performance evaluation of Recognition
  • Deep Learning
  • Optimization for deep learning
  • Supervised learning

Call for papers: "Transformative technologies and the design of next generation supply networks"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Technology Management.

Networked organisations are increasingly adopting a ‘smarter networking’ philosophy in their design of more agile and customer-focused supply models. Changing consumer behaviours and the emergence of transformative process and digital technologies—industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, the Internet of Things—are driving a series of innovations, in terms of ‘products’ and business models, with major implications for the industrial enterprise, in their design of more ‘digitalised’ supply chains.

Studies involving such transformative technologies continue to capture the interest of academics, industrialists, and government policy makers as often yet untapped sources of significant ‘value’ creation. In recent years, research in this area has typically focused on product R&D technologies, coupled with their particular technology commercialisation challenges.

However, industrial systems are growing more complex, and are not readily described by a single viewpoint. It is now widely recognised that manufacturing value chains (including subsequent stages for design for manufacture, engineering, production operations ramp-up, route-to-market, in-use activities) are critical to transforming new technologies and ideas into innovative products and services.

Running through all of this was a common thread that emphasised the need to connect, network and collaborate across the supply chain, whether through enterprise-wide IT integration at one end of the spectrum or by targeting engagement with supply chain partners at the other. However, the design, set-up and operation of enabling supply networks, in the context of transformative technologies, are still poorly understood.

This special issue focuses on transformative technologies and next-generation supply networks, drawing on examples of process technology innovations and more customer-focused supply chains that are actively exploiting the potential of, for example, big data analytics and social media to innovate in terms of the design of new production or supply chain replenishment models (e.g. new routes to market) and/or novel business models.

Consistent with the mission of IJTM, submitted papers should contain a significant empirical contribution and enable communication between academics, industrialists, and policymakers to further knowledge and research, as well as theory and practice, in the field of transformative technologies and management. Original research and development papers, review papers, and qualitative/quantitative studies are welcome. The relevance of next generation supply networks and/or transformative technologies encompassing, for example, industrial systems transformation, digitalisation, industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, the Internet of Things should be explicit. Such contexts could include (but are not limited to):
  • Understanding the dynamics of transformative technologies and subsequent engagement with complex industrial networks
  • Insights on the interaction between various stages of the manufacturing value chain and digitally-enabled consumer-centric supply chains
  • Collaborative supply chain models, crowdsourcing and the sharing economy
  • Digital supply chain design, analysis and operation
  • Visualisation of value showing potential value streams for network partners
  • Industrial network development from the perspectives of different stakeholders
  • Trends and generic stages of supply network evolution
  • Effective management of resources through the implementation of supply chain strategies
  • Development of frameworks and their application to support the configuration of next generation supply networks

Call for papers: "Applications of Marketing Science in Asian Countries"

For a special issue of the Asian Journal of Management Science and Applications.

Dynamic multiculturalism continues to be a vital aspect of global marketing that affects consumers and businesses around the world. This special issue aims at focusing on the emergence of Asian countries as one of the leading markets in the global economy, and the associated application of marketing science that makes Asian countries an exciting opportunity for marketing practices today. There are numerous reasons to bring out the special issue for which the time is now opportune. The advent of research on emerging markets is increasing, especially in the Asian countries. Recent research within the last two decades (e.g., Sheth 2011; Gu, Hung, and Tse 2008; Hitt et al. 2000; Hoskisson et. al., 2000) have highlighted the challenges and excitement in the application of marketing science in the context of emerging markets. However, the marketing literature with a focus on Asian markets is still emerging (e.g., Jaikumar and Sarin, 2015; Mishra et al., 2015; Tat et al., 2015; Singh et al.,2015; Singh & Das, 2013). Moreover, the gross domestic product of the emerging markets will take over that of advanced markets by 2035 (Wilson and Purushothaman 2003). This issue emphasises the need for educators and business leaders to recognise, appreciate, and understand the significance of the application of marketing science in the Asian environment including different cultures and cross-cultural business practices, as they affect both domestic and multinational marketing strategies.

Both conceptual (or theoretical) papers, as well as empirical papers, are welcome, and the special issue is also agnostic to any method or methodologies that may be used by contributing authors.

The issue will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at the National Marketing Conference, but we also strongly encourage researchers unable to participate in the conference to submit articles for this call.
