Considerable developments in various active safety control systems for vehicles have contributed to reducing the driving demands imposed on the human driver whilst ensuring driver safety. The ergonomic design aspects of vehicles are also being increasingly emphasised to enhance ease and comfort of driving by facilitating driver-vehicle interactions that determine the vehicle performance. These include the interior design to adapt to human anthropometric dimensions, driver and passenger posture, the perception of comfort and accommodation, noise and vibration, and more. Considerable challenges, however, exist in integrating the cognition and neuro-muscular capacity and limitations of the human driver occupants in design process owing to wide variations in the physical, physiological and psychological features of the human. Ergonomics, therefore, plays an important role during the design and developing a vehicle.
The objective of this special issue is to compile recent research and development efforts in the field of vehicle ergonomics including: user perceptions in seating/workstation design, vehicle interior, and the layout of controls, user friendliness of conventional and autonomous vehicles, noise and vibration, the state of the art in the associated supporting technologies, as well as perspectives on future developments and applications. We will follow an overarching theme integrating the fundamental and applied research efforts on ergonomic design features affecting comfort and safety of the driver and the passenger derived from experimental, simulations and subjective methods.
