Modelling and simulation of discrete systems is a multidisciplinary research area actively developed by researchers of applied mathematics and statistics, computer science, industrial engineering, management science, and operations research. Furthermore, it is a research area consisting of various hybrid approaches by those disciplines as researchers and practitioners alike actively seek newer and better methods for their modelling and simulation needs for most efficient solution of problems in engineering, business, management, and economics.
Discrete event systems modelling and simulation is indeed a broad area covering both theoretical and practical aspects, including theory and formal models (e.g. Petri nets, Markov processes, queuing theory, etc.), performance analysis, optimization, and hybrid approaches (discrete-continuous systems, AI based techniques, etc.), application of modern tools, algorithms, technologies, and techniques.
For the special issue, we are seeking high quality papers on modelling and simulation of discrete event systems presenting general theories, methodologies, solutions or presenting specific problems with solutions. Papers ranging from micro systems to large scalable systems are of interest, as are papers discussing practical problems and ad hoc methodologies and solutions. Recent topics like Web-based simulation and distributed simulations are also welcome. Preference will be given to high quality papers that have a firm grounding in scientific and mathematical methods, instead of primarily application-based papers. Because a substantial gap continues to exist between theory and practice, theoretical papers that also include a real-world applications are very much appreciated.
We encourage submission of high-quality papers that take a systems approach to modelling and simulation of discrete event systems. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Manufacturing and logistics: planning, control, robotics, measurement, monitoring
- Development and application of new methods and techniques (e.g. fuzzy modelling, knowledge and data mining, neural networks and evolutionary computation, GIS-based modelling)
