Newly announced journal: International Journal of Nuclear Exergy
In a world running out of fossil fuels, facing multifaceted scarcity and contending with pollution, all energies are not equal. This provokes many arguments based mainly on political tenets instead of science. In this context the concept of energy can be usefully substituted by "exergy", i.e. "the maximum useful work that can be extracted from a system as it reversibly comes into equilibrium with its environment". The International Journal of Nuclear Exergy presents research that uses the exergy framework to address the challenges facing humanity.

Teaching plagiarism
Students are well aware of the concept of plagiarism, when it involves simply copying chunks of text from a textbook, website, or other source. However, the boundaries are blurred when it comes to plagiarising the work of fellow students or self-plagiarism in which they use their own work again all in an effort to reduce the amount work they need to apply to their course. Research from Australia suggests that current efforts to reduce plagiarism among students are not working. If the quality of education and learning is to be maintained or raised, then students and their educators must be made more aware of the problems to which plagiarism can lead.
Palmer, A., Oakley, G. and Pegrum, M. (2017) ‘A culture of sharing: transnational higher education students’ views on plagiarism in the digital era’, Int. J. Management in Education, Vol. 11, No. 4, pp.381-404.
Rumour, hyperbole, and fake news
In the age of social media and social networking, rumour and hype are rife. Indeed, many observers have blamed the rise in populism on the online rumour mills and the advent of fake news (once known simply as propaganda). It is as if any fact can now be queried and tabloid journalists and politicians alike are exploiting the intellectually vulnerable to their own ends by blurring the lines between fact and fiction and stretching their being economical with the truth as far as possible. Researchers in China have devised a research tool in the form of a rumour-spreading model that they can unleash on an experimental social network in order to see how fake news propagates and to offer remedies that might block the spread of such hyperbole and propaganda.
Wang, A., Wu, W. and Chen, J. (2017) ‘A novel rumour propagation model on social networks’, Int. J. Sensor Networks, Vol. 25, No. 2, pp.126–133.
Hydrogen economy could take flight
There is widespread suggestion that hydrogen obtained from the sustainable release of the gas from water might provide the fuel of the future for transportation in a so-called hydrogen economy, as opposed to the current carbon economy with its pollution costs and global warming implications. However, will that hydrogen economy extend above the clouds or as that simply blue-skies thinking? Scientists in Australia suggest that there are many opportunities but also many challenges facing efforts to convert the aviation industry to hydrogen-based flight. The team suggests that cryogenic (liquid) hydrogen could be a sustainable, economical and “lighter” fuel for aircraft than the energy derived from fossil fuels used today. They suggest that a redesign of aircraft would be required to accommodate the necessary technology. However, reduction in aerodynamic efficiency might be offset by the 11% economic saving on fuel for light aircraft and 25% saving for wide-body aircraft. Nevertheless, there remain many technological challenges before this sea change in aviation will take flight.
Rondinelli, S., Gardi, A., Kapoor, R. and Sabatini, R. (2017) ‘Benefits and challenges of liquid hydrogen fuels in commercial aviation‘, Int. J. Sustainable Aviation, Vol. 3, No. 3, pp.200-216.
Microbial energy
Fossil fuels are a limited resource and their use presents us with significant problems in the face of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels due to their unfettered use in transport, industry and in the home. The fuel cell, powered with a sustainable and renewable supply of fuel might solve many of those problems. Now, a team from India has reviewed the state of the art in one particularly promising class of fuel cell, the microbial fuel cell. These devices use living microorganisms as the organic substrate for generating electricity. The team explains how current limitations of such fuel cells are gradually being overcome to bring them to the fore as an alternative, localised way to generate electricity for a wide range of applications. Moreover, the same device can be adapted to clean waste water by processing microbes in the water. They can even be used to generate clean hydrogen, which might be used elsewhere or to power a secondary, more efficient fuel cell.
Singh, V., Saxena, A., Gupta, A., Singh, S., Kaul, V. and Kumar, N. (2017) ‘Microbial fuel cell – a source of renewable energy: a review‘, Int. J. Renewable Energy Technology, Vol. 8, No. 2, pp.104-118.

Education in the cloud
Cloud computing is still in its infancy although many organisations, corporations and individuals have recognised the benefits of shifting computer services and storage on to remote computers they can subsequently access from anywhere they can connect to the Internet. The resource savings and energy savings can be significant. In education, it is possible to build a cloud infrastructure using desktop PCs and on-campus servers to lower overall costs and resource requirements. A new model for this CloudCampus is described by researchers from Portugal.
Monteiro, A., Teixeira, C. and Pinto, J.S. (2017) ‘CloudCampus: building an ubiquitous cloud with classroom PCs at a university campus‘, Int. J. Computational Systems Engineering, Vol. 3, No. 3, pp.113-123.
What the hash?
Hashtags are keywords usually flagged in socialmedia with the keyboard character #. They represent a useful tool for searching specific topics, events, and current affairs on microblogging platforms, such as Twitter and other online social networking and social media sites. Researchers in Hong Kong point out that with more than half a billion “tweets” (Twitter updates) each day it is important for some users and data miners to have straightforward ways to reduce the information overload, or at least, filter it. The team has now developed a hashtag recommendation system that one might think of as a pre-filtering system to allow groups of users or users whose tweets are likely to be concerned with a particular topic to focus their output for easier subsequent search and retrieval.
Cheung, K.C. and Cheung, T.K.Y. (2017) ‘Recommendation of hashtags in social Twitter network‘, Int. J. Data Analysis Techniques and Strategies, Vol. 9, No. 3, pp.222-236.
Puzzling
The so-called “15-puzzle” is one of a collection of mathematical problems that are particularly difficult to solve. The puzzle has been around since at least as long ago as the nineteenth century and involves a board of size 4 × 4 and 15 numbered tiles (1-15) each of which can sit in a single square on the board. The objective is to move tiles initially placed at random, one at a time from square to square, until we have arranged the tiles in numerical order left to right top to bottom, starting with tile number 1 at the top left-hand square and finishing with tile number 15 second bottom right and square 16 left empty. There have been numerous “solutions” to the puzzle that involve finding the minimum number of moves to achieve the complete puzzle and many algorithms developed to allow a computer to solve the problem. Achieving an efficient and minimal solution has potential applications in logistics, manufacturing and all kinds of engineering problems where data and physicals objects must be moved and rearranged efficiently. The Hong Kong team takes us a square closer to such a solution with their smaller algorithm. Indeed, finding a smaller algorithm is in itself a complicated puzzle.
Utsunomiya, K. and Asahiro, Y. (2017) ‘Improvement of the greedy algorithm for (n 2 – 1)-puzzle‘, Int. J. Innovative Computing and Applications, Vol. 8, No. 3, pp.133-148.
Sounding off about computers
We rely on audio cues increasingly to allow us to efficiently use digital technology and smart objects, whether they are phones or washing machines. Now researchers in France are investigating how sound is playing such an increasingly important role in our everyday lives. Specifically, they are focusing on how incorporating the need for sound into the design process of smart devices is an important factor in making the human-machine interaction work best. The team reviewed the literature in this field and interviewed practitioners, which allowed them to devise a lexicon of 35 terms to describe sound characteristics that might then be utilised in the smart device design process to make development consistent across the field.
Carron, M., Rotureau, T., Dubois, F., Misdariis, N. and Susini, P. (2017) ‘Speaking about sounds: a tool for communication on sound features‘, J. Design Research, Vol. 15, No. 2, pp.85-109.

Tweeting at the movies
The amount of data generated by online social networks increases significantly day by day and marketing executives from all kinds of industries need ways to analyze this information efficiently to improve their company profits and customer engagement. Reserachers in South Korea have looked at identifying market-applicable insights concerning textual big data, such as the vast numbers of updates on the microblogging service Twitter, commonly known as “tweets” by analogy with the site’s avian affectation. Electronic word-of-mouth (e-WoM) is important for consumers who are always connected through their mobile and desktop devices. However, the team hoped to isolate e-WoM effects in moviegoer choices from the tweets. They have now found that which movie people go to see can be strongly influenced bv the tweets they see whether positive or negative and this can therefore have a direct impact on the industry’s revenues regardless of the more usual word-of-mouth effects.
‘How people utilise tweets on movie selection? The reverse effects of e-WoM valence on movie sales‘, kang, H., Chai, S., Kim, H.U. (2017), Int. J. Mobile Commun., Vol.15, No.5, pp.537 – 553
Clearing the pipelines
As crude oil ages it forms heavy, viscous waxes that can stick to the interiors of pipelines and storage vessels and ultimately lead to blockages. It is the formation of long-chain paraffins that is to blame. Costs of blockages can amount to huge losses and costs of billions of dollars ultimately. Indian researchers have now reviewed in detail microbial degradation of waxy crude oils and the different mechanisms of hydrocarbon degradation that might be exploited to clear such blockages. On this basis, they suggest an approach to screening for optimal microorganism suitable for different environmental conditions in pipeline cleanup in different parts of the world as well as in oil spill bioremediation and microbial-based enhanced oil recovery techniques.
‘Enhanced microbial degradation of waxy crude oil: a review on current status and future perspective‘, Sakthipriya, N., Doble, M., and Sangwai, J.S. (2017) Int. J. Oil, Gas Coal Technol., 2017 Vol.16, No.2, pp.130 – 165.
Climate change denial
There are many infamous and prominent public figures who deny the science underpinning climate change. Researchers in the USA have investigated public perceptions of the risks associated with climate change because such perceptions are an important factor in the public’s willingness to support efforts to mitigate against climate change. Their analysis suggests that increased objective risk and individual capacity result in significantly higher perception of risk from climate change, whereas higher individual climate stress results in lower risk perceptions. Given that many policymakers are in denial regarding climate change, this could be a serious problem as we face growing threats from extreme weather and rising temperatures.
‘Understanding climate change risk perception in the USA‘, Grover, H., Brody, S.D., and Vedlitz, A. (2017) Int. J. Global Warming, 2017 Vol.13, No.2, pp.113 – 137.

Almost silent demolition
Researchers in Ireland, the UK, and the USA have investigated the properties of soundless chemical demolition agents (SCDAs) for the significant benefits of no harmful shock waves, no explosive sound, and no risk of explosives being used for malicious intent. These materials are used as a non-detonating alternative to dynamite and other explosive materials for quarrying, mining, and demolition. They are added to a liquid, usually water, and poured into drilled holes or cracks in a site or building. Over the course of several hours they expand causing further fracturing of rock or building structure. There has been a concern that experimental SCDAs would be ineffective below a certain ambient temperature, however, the research now shows that ambient temperature retards onset of initial fracturing but it is the nature of the materials to be fractured, their strength, that ultimately determines how effective a given SCDA process is.

Cyber impersonation
Malicious attacks on computer systems are becoming more frequent as is the sophistication of the attacks. Now, researchers in Spain have developed a meta-heuristic learning approach that could be implemented as a non-intrusive detection method for spotting so-called impersonation attacks in online social networks. Such attacks are used by cybercriminals and others with malicious intent to gain private and personal information that might then be escalated to a more complete attack on the individual, such as identity theft, or widespread attack on a large database and the leaking of millions of user records, for instance. The new detection method measures connection time of users on a social network and combined with historical data and other factors can reveal whether an individual’s account has been compromised and issue a warning or block activity summarily.

Social emotion
Researchers in India have looked at the nine human emotions in the context of social networking activity and the implications for what is commonly referred to as viral marketing. Given that for many people their social networks are the source of much opinion and information as well as the content from artistic creators and marketers alike, it is easy to see how such networks influence what people share and on which they opine. Ultimately, the team’s analysis of emotional content online might be used by marketing departments at commercial and other concerns to improve the response to ongoing campaigns.

Clean water with light
Photocatalysis could be used to make water safe to drink, particularly, in developing countries. According to researchers from Iran and Malaysia, nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (titania) can be used as the photocatalyst for destroying pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) when ultraviolet light is shone on the water. The nanoparticles can then be removed by filtration. The team has demonstrated that the optimal photocatalyst concentration is 0.5 grams per litre. They have now investigated the kinetics of the photocatalytic degradation process to obtain a model of how the process works with a view to improvement. Increased UV light intensity and system aeration are the most effective ways to boost the photocatalytic reaction, the team reports.
