Call for papers: "Intelligent Systems for Cyber Security: Current Trends, Applications and New Challenges"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Computational Intelligence Studies.

In the last decades, the cyber domain has played a major role in advancing science and technology. But the interconnection of systems through networks, access to information, different computer technologies and the combination of all these aspects is exposes both academic and industry infrastructures to serious risks. These broadly derive from unauthorised operations or access to computerised platforms without permission of the platform's owner. The consequences of these attacks are almost always invasive and disruptive for the computerised systems, and can be fatal if the attacks are performed in the domain of smart health devices. The need therefore arises to research effective security-based solutions for nullifying these risks or countering the attacks. In recent years, this has been successfully accomplished through the use of intelligent technologies, including artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning solutions. In fact, these have provided valid support in many areas including cyber risk identification, risk assessment of software packages, and preserving security in Internet connections.

Today, intelligent systems for cyber security cover a broad range of areas, including smart cities, cyber-physical systems and critical infrastructures, security of vehicles and implantable medical devices, malware research, cryptography, biometrics, watermarking, human-computer interaction security, security in wireless sensor networks, security in radio-frequency identification, early detection and intervention, and privacy. Given the high academic and industrial impact of researching in these areas for the sake of beneficial effects on society, this special issue will cover basic trends, applications and challenges through theoretical or application-based contributions underlying the construction of secure systems starting from hardware and software and ending at the human-computer interface. Accordingly, it is possible to expect cryptography usage to enable secure interactions. All papers exploring state-of-the-art solutions in the form of extended reviews or advanced research papers are especially welcome.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • Artificial intelligence for cryptography
  • Complex networks algorithms for cyber security
  • Human-computer interaction security or usable security
  • Security in cloud services
  • Security and trust in context-aware systems
  • Intelligent intrusion detection
  • Intelligent biometrics

BitCoin to end poverty and corruption
Could “blockchain” technology and the so-called BitCoin currency lift a country like Moldova, which was part of the Soviet Union, and reduce state-wide corruption? Researchers there and in France have carried out a case study of how a new electronic economic might emerge in parallel with “tourism 2.0” and how coupled with e-governance such a state might be lifted out of poverty. The team reports that these new technologies constitute a significant step in the right direction, in order to break away from twenty-five years of disappointing socio-economic development performance.
Pilkington, M., Crudu, R. and Grant, L.G. (2017) ‘Blockchain and bitcoin as a way to lift a country out of poverty – tourism 2.0 and e-governance in the Republic of Moldova’, Int. J. Internet Technology and Secured Transactions, Vol. 7, No. 2, pp.115–143.

Silent flight
Owls are renowned avian hunters. One of their evolutionary adaptations, especially for hunting at night is that their flight is near silent. Scientists previously demonstrated that the barbs on the leading edge of primary flight feathers in species such as the barn owl (Tyto alba) act to break up airflow and essentially prevent the wing from making whooshing noises as air rolls across it while the bird glides and descends on prey. Now, researchers in China have taken a close look at the primary feathers of another owl, the long-eared owl (Asio otus) and found that the morphological and mechanical characteristics of the barbules and the way they branch on the long-eared owl primary feather represents a scaling law. The branching diameters throughout the hierarchy of branches (rachis, barb, barbicel) and their mechanical properties are congruent. Such insights could help in the development of biomimetic systems for human aviation, aerospace, marine, and other fields where noise and turbulence are to be minimized.
Gao, J., Chu, J., Guan, L., and Zhang, R., (2017) ‘Mechanical properties and size scaling of long-eared owl primary feather‘ Int. J. Mater Struct Integrity, Vol.11, No.1/2/3, pp.32-50.

Food waste
A study from researchers in Kuwait reveals that at least 10% of perishable goods, such as fruit and vegetables, are discarded by supermarkets, not because of spoilage, but because of customer attitude to less than perfect produce. The team has also looked at the elemental content of such waste and assessed its value as compost and the optimal temperature and process for retrieving valuable material from spoiled food. Importantly, much of the mass of any such food waste is water (85%) and is overall of greater density than general municipal waste and so represents a significant waste management problem for supermarkets and the refuse and recycling companies that service them.
Hamoda, M.F., (2017) ‘Management of discarded organic produce from supermarkets and hypermarkets’, Int. J. Environ. Waste Manage., Vol.20, No.3, pp.264 – 282

Driverless cars? There’s an app for that!
Researchers in India are working on the concept of an interface for a robotic car controlled by the Android operating system. They have developed a miniature model of a Bluetooth controlled device which uses Android as the software interface and an Arduino Atmega328 microcontroller hardware component. The team explains that the setup offers autonomous control of a car. The notion of a so-called “backseat driver” taking control of your car just came a step closer.

Research Picks Extra – November 2017

Workaholics of the world unite, if you have time
The work-life balance is a common thread in discussions of wellbeing. Today, many employees struggle to find personal time for activities unrelated to work especially now that so many of us can be contacted via mobile devices at any time of the day or night as well as feeling obliged to constantly check social media and work emails. Research to see whether different cultures have different effects on so-called workaholism has investigated the United Arab Emirates and India. It emerges that in both regions, having a “type A” personality (outgoing and ambitious) tends to correlate with workaholism, as one might suspect. However, in UAE characteristics of the job itself play an important role, whereas in India it is mostly individual personality. Moreover, women in India appear to be more inclined to workaholism than females in UAE.
Sharma, J., Singh, A. and Sharma, P. (2017) ‘A journey into the heart of workaholism from cross-cultural perspective‘, Int. J. Human Resources Development and Management, Vol. 17, Nos. 3/4, pp.185-204.

Let’s hear it for the beer
Beer marketing is not all froth, brand loyalty for one’s favourite tipple can cause sales to ebb and flow depending on many factors. Predictors of brand loyalty, according to researchers in Portugal, include perceived value, consumer satisfaction, and trust. Their study of almost 1200 student beer drinkers points to brand awareness leading to brand loyalty. This inverts the received wisdom that it is brand loyalty that drives brand performance. Their detailed findings offer actionable insights for brand managers and marketing departments in the beer industry. An example of such action might be for a company to invest in brand communities and events, strengthening the bond between beer drinker and brand.
Augusto, M.G. and Torres, P.M. (2017) ‘The path to brand loyalty in the beer market‘, Int. J. Entrepreneurship and Small Business, Vol. 32, No. 3, pp.287-298.

Local power, for local people
Generating power and heat at the point of use is one of the promising alternative energy approaches for reducing infrastructure costs in the developed and the developing world. The possibility of utilising various conventional and renewable technologies also opens up the chance to reduce pollution and carbon emissions. Researchers in Canada and South Korea explain that microgeneration systems have already demonstrated comparable electric efficiency to conventional power stations, good environmental performance, and the ability to serve as a source for both primary and back-up power. The implementation of smart energy networks, they add offers a way to recoup the costs of switching to microgeneration over the lifetime of the installation.
Euy Joon Lee, Evgueniy Entchev, Libing Yang, Mohamed Ghorab, and Eun Chul Kang (2017) ‘Smart hybrid renewable microgeneration system for residential applications‘, Int. J. Global Warming, Vol. 13, No.3/4, pp.459-472.

Pink collar workers
Office staff are often referred to as “white collar workers”, employees in industry and the trades as “blue collar”, “pink collar” workers refers to people working in the service industries, hospitality and healthcare support. US researchers point out that a lot of effort has purportedly been put into closing the gender pay gap across various areas of employment, it is not clear whether the glass ceilings at the local and state level in the USA have been smashed. Their research shows that there is very much still in place a glass ceiling facing women in traditional “pink collar” roles, such as nursing, teaching, etc.

Newly announced journal: International Journal of Nuclear Exergy

In a world running out of fossil fuels, facing multifaceted scarcity and contending with pollution, all energies are not equal. This provokes many arguments based mainly on political tenets instead of science. In this context the concept of energy can be usefully substituted by "exergy", i.e. "the maximum useful work that can be extracted from a system as it reversibly comes into equilibrium with its environment". The International Journal of Nuclear Exergy presents research that uses the exergy framework to address the challenges facing humanity.

IJNEx was formed in September 2017 from a merger of the International Journal of Nuclear Desalination (IJND), 2003-2011 (Vols. 1-4) and the International Journal of Nuclear Hydrogen Production and Applications (IJNHPA), 2006-2016 (Vols. 1-3).

Teaching plagiarism
Students are well aware of the concept of plagiarism, when it involves simply copying chunks of text from a textbook, website, or other source. However, the boundaries are blurred when it comes to plagiarising the work of fellow students or self-plagiarism in which they use their own work again all in an effort to reduce the amount work they need to apply to their course. Research from Australia suggests that current efforts to reduce plagiarism among students are not working. If the quality of education and learning is to be maintained or raised, then students and their educators must be made more aware of the problems to which plagiarism can lead.

Rumour, hyperbole, and fake news
In the age of social media and social networking, rumour and hype are rife. Indeed, many observers have blamed the rise in populism on the online rumour mills and the advent of fake news (once known simply as propaganda). It is as if any fact can now be queried and tabloid journalists and politicians alike are exploiting the intellectually vulnerable to their own ends by blurring the lines between fact and fiction and stretching their being economical with the truth as far as possible. Researchers in China have devised a research tool in the form of a rumour-spreading model that they can unleash on an experimental social network in order to see how fake news propagates and to offer remedies that might block the spread of such hyperbole and propaganda.

Hydrogen economy could take flight
There is widespread suggestion that hydrogen obtained from the sustainable release of the gas from water might provide the fuel of the future for transportation in a so-called hydrogen economy, as opposed to the current carbon economy with its pollution costs and global warming implications. However, will that hydrogen economy extend above the clouds or as that simply blue-skies thinking? Scientists in Australia suggest that there are many opportunities but also many challenges facing efforts to convert the aviation industry to hydrogen-based flight. The team suggests that cryogenic (liquid) hydrogen could be a sustainable, economical and “lighter” fuel for aircraft than the energy derived from fossil fuels used today. They suggest that a redesign of aircraft would be required to accommodate the necessary technology. However, reduction in aerodynamic efficiency might be offset by the 11% economic saving on fuel for light aircraft and 25% saving for wide-body aircraft. Nevertheless, there remain many technological challenges before this sea change in aviation will take flight.

Microbial energy
Fossil fuels are a limited resource and their use presents us with significant problems in the face of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels due to their unfettered use in transport, industry and in the home. The fuel cell, powered with a sustainable and renewable supply of fuel might solve many of those problems. Now, a team from India has reviewed the state of the art in one particularly promising class of fuel cell, the microbial fuel cell. These devices use living microorganisms as the organic substrate for generating electricity. The team explains how current limitations of such fuel cells are gradually being overcome to bring them to the fore as an alternative, localised way to generate electricity for a wide range of applications. Moreover, the same device can be adapted to clean waste water by processing microbes in the water. They can even be used to generate clean hydrogen, which might be used elsewhere or to power a secondary, more efficient fuel cell.
