Biomedical engineering is a fast emerging field which is drawing together disciplinary approaches found in engineering, medicine and the life sciences in the interests of improved healthcare provision. The aims of this special issue are to look at how engineering methods and methodologies are applied in the biomedical field and to consider what kind of new disciplinary insights are acquired by both engineers and clinicians.
Of particular interest will be new equipment designed for diagnosis, monitoring and therapeutic uses. The equipment design is also likely to involve the investigation of new synthetic materials, which may offer uses beyond the clinical. The proving of these designs may also set new challenges for demonstrating product efficacy, particularly in respect of winning medical device accreditation for novel concepts. The editors therefore invite the submission of papers that will illustrate and expand these themes for the benefit of all those engaged in this field, including engineers, clinicians, bioengineers and quality assurance experts.
