If you want your cut gerberas to last longer in the vase, you could try a flower food made from acids and urea. That’s the conclusion of research published in the International Journal of Postharvest Technology and Innovation.
Gerbera jamesonii also known as the Transvaal daisy or African daisy, is a species native to South Africa and one of the most important commercially grown flower crops. Its large, vividly and varied blooms make it an attractive species for floral displays and a favorite in many households. Unfortunately, as with all cut flowers, “vase life” is limited to just a few days if the blooms are simply dunked in a water-filled vessel.
Now, Maryam Jamshidi and Ebrahim Hadavi of the Department of Horticultural Sciences, at Islamic Azad University Karaj, and Roohangiz Naderi of the University of Tehran, Iran, have tested various treatments to see if they can extend the vase-life of cut gerbera blooms. Their tests with various combinations of salicyclic acid (the active derivative of the painkiller drug aspirin), malic acid (which causes the tart taste of many ripened fruits) and urea (the main nitrogen-containing chemical in mammalian urine), have shown that they can extend bloom time in the vase for gerberas from about a week to more than two weeks compared with untreated flowers.
The combination of salicylic acid, malic acid and urea, prevents contamination of the submerged stems with bacteria that would otherwise quickly kill the blooms. However, salicylic acid can also help sustain enzyme activity in the stems, specifically peroxidase enzyme activity. Likewise, the malic acid. The presence of urea acts as a source of nitrogen that can be absorbed by the stems and act as a sustaining nutrient. These compounds are all readily available to the industry and could be provided as a packaged formulation to be added to vase water to keep one’s gerbera flying.

Horizontal genes in E coli
Escherichia coli O104 is an emergent disease-causing bacterium various strains of which are becoming increasingly well known and troublesome. The pathogen causes bloody diarrhea as well as and potentially fatal kidney damage, hemolytic uremic syndrome. Infection is usually through inadvertent ingestion of contaminated and incompletely cooked food or other materials, such as animals feces.
Escherichia coli is a so-called gram negative bacterium, commonly found in the intestine of humans and other mammals. Entero-hemorrhagic strains including O157, O26, O103 and O111 and specifically the sub-strain O157:H7 is an important cause of food borne illness in North America, the UK and Japan.
One particular strain, highlighted by Indian researchers in the International Journal of Bioinformatics Research and Applications, O104:H4, causes serious complications and has developed significant multiple-drug resistance to antibiotics. Moreover, it has acquired genes through horizontal transfer from other strains that make it even more virulent than others.
The team from Madurai Kamaraj University in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, working with colleagues at Genotypic Technology Pvt Ltd in Karnataka, have used the tools of computational molecular biology to identify 38 such horizontal gene transfer elements, prophage elements. These elements the team explains are genetic weapons that protect the bacteria from antibiotics and have been acquired from viruses, known as bacteriophages, that usually infect bacteria.
More than a quarter of the genome of this strain of E coli comprises prophage elements, the team explains. These elements are also involved in the production of lethal compounds such as Shiga toxin, which give rise to many of the symptoms of infection. As such, they might represent new diagnostic markers or even targets for the development of novel antibiotics that circumvent the protective measures acquired by the bacteria.

With the advent of computer power and software development, today’s CAE simulation is not constrained by any single physical discipline or domain. The finite element method (FEM), computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and multibody dynamics (MBD) can be involved in a single simulation to evaluate vehicle system performance. Furthermore, control logic and one-dimensional simulation techniques can be added to the aforementioned simulation disciplines to enhance simulation capabilities so that they represent a more realistic physical world.

Mobile balance
New technology, such as smart phones and tablet computers are making it increasingly difficult for workers to disconnect from their jobs. As such, US researchers have concluded that information and communication technology (ICT) while an enabler and facilitator of so much in our work and personal lives is creating blurred lines between the two and disrupting the notion of a work-life balance. The team has shown that workers do indeed benefit from using their mobile devices in the workplace and productivity rises. But, when that use extends into the personal domain, as it frequently does, employer expectations, flexibility of work structure, and work-life balance are all altered. This can lead to conflicting demands from work and personal life.

Educating nurses, at a stroke
Researchers in Austria have developed a continuous learning system for nurses involved in the treatment and care of stroke patients. The system allows nurses to keep abreast of the growing body of knowledge emerging from ongoing research into this debilitating condition as well as helping them to relate the theory with their day-to-day nursing practice. Initial trials with working nurses demonstrated efficacy in terms of improved knowledge among the nurses tested as well as user acceptance and satisfaction with the system. The team is now investigating how the necessary information technology might be integrated into an active emergency ward without interfering with standard nursing practices.

A new technique that allows scratches to be removed from digitized versions of old and damaged film movies has been developed by researchers in China. Their approach finds the start and end of scratches and measures them using a mathematical formula known as a Sobel operator or filter that can find edges in digital images. Once detected, the team’s algorithm then replaces the pixels that made up the line with near neighbors within each frame to replace the missing data and make the finished movie seem scratch free. Initial tests prove efficacy with straight, vertical scratch lines, the next step will be to develop the algorithm to detect and repair scratches at other angles and ultimately more complicated scratches.

The team’s tests show how the combination of online services and interoperability between disaster portals and social networks can improve disaster management. For instance, the system allowed almost three-quarters of users to estimate the precise location of a disaster, such as a fire, in simulations.

Recent regulatory requirements for continuous improvements on fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas reductions worldwide have generated unprecedented drive for a total vehicle approach to minimise the fuel consumption incurred by each major system within a vehicle.
With the significant benefits of engine downsizing on fuel consumption and emissions, the adaptation of turbo-charged engines is becoming increasingly popular for the purpose of maintaining superior engine performance. In the meantime, smaller engines often run hotter than engines with larger displacement. The continuous pressure to reduce vehicle aerodynamic drag also generates competing demands for engine cooling systems under various vehicle speeds.
Consequently, thermal management systems need to be refined and optimised in order to provide optimum fuel economy while ensuring all heat-sensitive components are within the temperature limits for products durability and reliability. Computational methods and virtual prototyping have been proven to provide important directions during the early design cycle, and have become critical tools for mitigating product development risks under the pressure to reduce time to market.
This special issue will feature new applications and advances in the fields of thermal systems optimisation of automobile components with evolutionary approaches. It will bring together research scientists and design engineers from across the globe to explore current challenges regarding on-demand thermal systems design, multi-objective optimisation algorithms, multi-fidelity simulation processes, model-based system engineering and identification of potential enablers related to simulation-driven design.
The issue will provide a platform intended to foster emerging technologies regarding recent progress of advanced thermal management systems design and optimisation related to the vehicle development processes.

Road profile is the cross-sectional shape of a road surface traversing the surrounding road corridor. It has been shown to have significant effects on various vehicle and driver conditions including ride, handling, fatigue and even energy efficiency, and as a result has become a variable of interest in the design and control of numerous vehicle parts.
Numerous measurement and analysing techniques are available, mainly based on the assumption that the longitudinal profile of elevations may be considered to be a realisation of certain stochastic functions, and that from their characteristics the indicators of unevenness and further relations (safety factor, friction, etc.) may be deduced. Simpler models assume homogeneous features of the unevenness along a given track, and more significant actions follow from marked local obstacles appearing randomly, which therefore are more convenient for real-time applications (e.g. active suspension) that require rapid response. Providing an accurate representation of such information on road profile or its effective portrayal suggests many improvements for a diverse range of vehicle systems from components to controller design.
This special issue will feature novel methods and advances in the study of modelling and identification of road profile with evolutionary approaches in an extended range of applications including vehicle dynamics, controls and active safety, new sensory system designs, and simulation tools mainly for tyre-road interaction. It aims to brings together scientists, engineers and experts worldwide to explore current issues regarding road profiling, estimation, sensory systems, their implementation in vehicle design, etc.
This issue will provide a platform intended to foster emerging ideas regarding the development of advanced estimation algorithms and novel measurement techniques for road profile and their applications in subjects related to vehicle controls, design and performance.

The Internet of Things (IoT) consists of sensors and smart things/objects that are connected to the internet any time and anywhere. Acting as a perception layer of IoT, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) play an important role by detecting events and collecting surrounding context and environment information. Since sensors are battery powered, replacing the batteries in each smart object/thing/sensor is very difficult to implement.
For the sustainability of network operations, energy harvesting and energy management technologies have recently gained much attention. Energy management is the most important technology for prolonging the network lifetime of WSNs. The design of efficient energy management involves several aspects, including physical, MAC and network elements as well as application aspects.
Energy harvesting is a novel and promising solution that sees each node equipped with a harvesting module. Recent research efforts in energy harvesting can be classified into two categories: energy scavenging and energy transferring. In energy scavenging technologies, the sensor can be recharged from the ambient environment, including electromagnetic waves, thermal energy and wind energy. In energy transferring technologies, the mobile node can play the role of charger which is able to wirelessly transfer energy to those sensors located within its recharging range.

The internet has become almost ubiquitous in the developed world and beyond with the advent of the smart phone and tablet computer. As such, staying secure and keeping information private has become an issue of utmost importance way beyond the traditional computer desktop. Writing in the International Journal of Information and Computer Security, computer scientists from the Ulster University, UK, have surveyed the security mechanisms that are now in place and their shortcomings.
Kevin Curran, Vivian Maynes and Declan Harkin reveal the whys and wherefores of encryption, authentication, remote wipe capabilities, lost phone hotlines, firewalls and anti-virus software. They also discuss the notion of a false sense of security that the implementation of such tools can bring and the loopholes that exist in the likes of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other wireless connectivity protocols.
The team points out that while many people are vaguely aware of privacy and security concerns many do not take the time to ensure that the information on their phones – their photos, bank details, account logins and such – are secure. They report that a survey by Information Week revealed that only half of smart phone users have their phones set to auto-lock with a PIN or password. Moreover, very few encrypt their emails making the details travelling to and fro across the mobile networks and Wi-Fi vulnerable to snoopers looking for backdoors into your financial accounts and other sensitive logins. It also leaves user vulnerable to being spied upon by government agencies.
“No one mobile OS is inherently more secure than another. They each have strengths and quite often the more popular one can be more secure but due to popularity, that is where most hacker attacks are aimed,” the team says. Users of Android, Apple or Microsoft smart phone operating systems are all vulnerable to hacking and snooping, some more so than others, but also depending on the third-party applications, or apps, one installs on the device.
The team suggests that primarily the onus is on the service providers. “The wireless network operators need to take responsibility for providing a secure, efficient mechanism of communication,” the team asserts. Secondly, “The mobile devices themselves need to incorporate system-level security to ensure they are not susceptible to attacks in both network and virus format.”

Call for papers: "Recent Advancement in Tyre Modelling, Parameterisation and Validation"
For a special issue of the International Journal of Vehicle Performance.

Over the years, virtual prototyping of vehicles and critical vehicle sub-components such as tyres has increasingly been used to assist in reducing time to market by shortening the design cycle time, support developmental projects at different stages and meet stringent product performance requirements. In particular, validated virtual tyre models of various levels of complexities and fidelities have been used in designing new tyres and evaluating vehicle performance using simulation results.
Tyres are complex entities that also provide modelling and simulation challenges. Their composite structures are known to be different from traditional metallic structures, while their behaviour such as large deformation and rolling contact which present geometrical non-linearity and contact discontinuities poses complex numerical challenges. Predictive virtual tyre models have been routinely used mostly as a virtual test bench by tyre developers and researchers investigating the performance of different tyre build for normal operating conditions. Such tyre models are used to analyse various Tyre applications such as generating forces and moments, tyre profile and footprint studies, burst pressure investigation, stress/strain analysis, heat generation, temperature distribution, etc. Knowledge gained from such stand-alone tyre models would undoubtedly help in the development of simpler but accurate tyre models for vehicle behaviour evaluations.
This special issue features new discoveries and advances in the field of tyre development, tyre material characterisation, parameter identification, sensitivity study, FEA Tyre modelling and simulation of heavy truck tyres for model parameterisation used for road loads prediction. It brings together vehicle and tyre experts in academia and industry worldwide to explore current issues regarding tyre modelling, material characterisation required in computational vehicle behaviour evaluations, etc.
This issue provides a platform intended to foster emerging ideas regarding development of advanced tyre modelling strategy for tyre design and vehicle performance evaluation.

Aerospace industries are in the process of changing their business models. The so-called “power-by-the-hour” philosophy and the “servitisation” transformation of manufacturing organisations to service providers have redefined the value of services in complex engineering systems such as aircraft and aerospace operations compared to the traditional value of the product. The economy and drivers in aerospace society are dominated by complex networks of service systems: overlapping systems that continuously interact and create value through innovative ideas and processes.
The increasing complexity and interactive capability of these support networks has led to an extensive exploration of the expansive possibilities for service innovation and integration across different types of support and service systems. In parallel, service engineering as a novel engineering discipline emerges, which includes comprehensive design methodology of both products and services. Today, two directions for its further development can be observed. First, depending on the industrial sector, manifold options and barriers must be considered and broken down to develop a marketable service offering. Second, traditional aerospace manufacturers have to preserve many internal and supporting activities with respect to manufacturers’ need to reorganise their processes in order to cope with the challenges of adopting a novel business model.
With this special issue, we aim to address various areas of support and service engineering integral to product-service development and its transformation into high-reliability service, product data management in services, technology insertion, COTS, obsolescence, synchronised forecasting of spare parts demand, and tight synchronisation of maintenance services with health monitoring and other supporting services from the research perspective. Comprehending gaze
Researchers in South Korea and India have used an eye-tracking technique that can follower a reader’s gaze to determine whether or not the person is understanding what they are reading. The eye tracking method monitors where and how long the person’s gaze fixates on specific answers in a multiple choice questionnaire and so can determine with accuracy whether or not the reader looked at the correct answer the longest after reading the question and the timing of the gaps between eye fixes, saccades. The team suggests that the concept might be used in classroom testing, or perhaps in the assessment of job applicants.

Natural concrete reinforcement
Natural materials, such as bamboo (Bambusa balcooa) and rattan (Daemonorops jenkinsiana) can be used instead of steel to successfully reinforce small concrete slabs, according to a team from Bangladesh. In the developing world where economics often preclude extensive building projects because of the requirement for steel reinforcement, biomaterials could one day be used instead. Engineers at the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology have demonstrated the efficacy of bamboo and rattan, which does not provide as great an improvement as steel, but could be useful for panels that are not load bearing and in other construction applications where reinforcement is necessary and costs need to be kept low.

Hot air for dried tomatoes
Scientists in Nigeria have developed a hot-air dryer for tomatoes that could accelerate the processing of the product for small-scale farmers at low cost. Dried tomato products and tomato powders have the greatest shelf life, especially compared to highly perishable fresh tomatoes and are popular across African society, the team reports. While sun-drying may have the “artisanal” quality popular with delicatessens and the like, it is a temperamental and inconsistent process where re-wetting of the product is common and leads to mould growth and loss of yield. The hot-air dryer is inexpensive, portable and offers consistent results at low power demand, the team adds.

Solar power split
Australian researchers have designed and demonstrated a prototype, standalone solar-hydrogen power generation system that uses a photovoltaic array to generate electricity and split water (electrolysis) to make hydrogen that can be stored if excess energy is generated. The team suggests this split power approach is an attractive solution for remote and portable applications. The solar electricity can be used on demand, while the stored hydrogen can be used later, at night or during inclement weather to power a fuel cell to generate electricity. Energy losses in the prototype are too high to make it commercially viable at this stage of development, but the team suggests that switching losses are the main issue and that this problem will soon be remedied.

Researchers in South Korea and India have used an eye-tracking technique that can follower a reader’s gaze to determine whether or not the person is understanding what they are reading. The eye tracking method monitors where and how long the person’s gaze fixates on specific answers in a multiple choice questionnaire and so can determine with accuracy whether or not the reader looked at the correct answer the longest after reading the question and the timing of the gaps between eye fixes, saccades. The team suggests that the concept might be used in classroom testing, or perhaps in the assessment of job applicants.

Natural concrete reinforcement
Natural materials, such as bamboo (Bambusa balcooa) and rattan (Daemonorops jenkinsiana) can be used instead of steel to successfully reinforce small concrete slabs, according to a team from Bangladesh. In the developing world where economics often preclude extensive building projects because of the requirement for steel reinforcement, biomaterials could one day be used instead. Engineers at the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology have demonstrated the efficacy of bamboo and rattan, which does not provide as great an improvement as steel, but could be useful for panels that are not load bearing and in other construction applications where reinforcement is necessary and costs need to be kept low.

Hot air for dried tomatoes
Scientists in Nigeria have developed a hot-air dryer for tomatoes that could accelerate the processing of the product for small-scale farmers at low cost. Dried tomato products and tomato powders have the greatest shelf life, especially compared to highly perishable fresh tomatoes and are popular across African society, the team reports. While sun-drying may have the “artisanal” quality popular with delicatessens and the like, it is a temperamental and inconsistent process where re-wetting of the product is common and leads to mould growth and loss of yield. The hot-air dryer is inexpensive, portable and offers consistent results at low power demand, the team adds.
