FAPA cloud protection

As cloud computing becomes increasingly prevalent, the need for protection against malicious attacks on servers becomes more pressing. Now, US computer scientists have developed FAPA, a flooding attack protection architecture, to protect users of cloud systems. They report details in the aptly named International Journal of Cloud Computing.

Kazi Zunnurhain, Susan Vrbsky and Ragib Hasan of the University of Alabama explain that cloud computing systems can prove economical and efficient for businesses, organizations and individuals that use the cloud. However, as with any online computer resource, cloud resources are vulnerable to hackers, malicious software, malware, and denial of service (DoS) attacks that can disable the system leading to outages and downtime for their users. These attacks can also result in potential leaks of private or sensitive data, such as username and password combinations, banking and credit card details or personal photographs and other vulnerable digital media.

Cloud service providers, such as those offering online storage, data management, web-based email systems, content management, social media and networking and other services, usually have their own security measures in place to protect their servers from malware and other problems. But the Alabama team suggests that users ought to take some responsibility for the security of their own data in the cloud just as one is obliged to do with the data on one’s computer hard drive.

The researchers have now developed the FAPA system to allow users to protect themselves in the cloud from DoS attacks. FAPA works on the user’s computer, rather than in the cloud, to detect and filter the errant data packets that are aimed at disabling a cloud server when a DoS attack is instigated by malware, a network of infected computers, a botnet, or hackers. FAPA runs on the “client” computer rather than the cloud server and is independent of the cloud provider.

So far, the team has demonstrated success in preventing downtime caused by a type of DoS attack known as TCP flooding, so that the client computer can carry on using a cloud service as the FAPA system filters out 80 percent of the fake, or spoofed, packets sent to the server in the attack. There are several other types of DoS attacks, including those that use TCP-SYN packets through a botnet, UDP packets, HTTP packets and fake ICMP echo requests. The team is currently working to extend FAPA to detect and filter these kinds of attack too.

Call for papers: "Wine Businesses"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business.

The wine market is experiencing rapid growth worldwide. For this special issue we are interested in research works investigating the case of firms in the wine industry. In the current context, being a good wine grower is not sufficient to succeed. Wine producers also need to be good wine sellers and wine exporters. This is a major challenge for wine producers. Moreover, the wine industry is characterised by long cycles, heavy investments, high storage costs and the uncertainty of climate factors. Thus, to face up to these difficulties, which strategy should be chosen? Traditional or industrial production?

The second point that we would like to address concerns the family characteristic of wine businesses. We are interested in how these family firms function, how they can adapt to the rapid growth of the wine industry, and whether this business model functions better than that of cooperative or multinational firms.

Thirdly, we would also like to explore the role of innovation in the wine industry: innovation in the production process, in the marketing process, in the packing process or in the brand process. How can wine businesses use the new technologies to develop their production and sales?

Finally, to succeed, do wine businesses need to cooperate and work together? What are the coopetition strategies that exist in the wine industry? How do these strategies impact on the financial performance of wine businesses?

We welcome all research articles that are related to the purposes presented above. However, we are not limited to these issues. All questions dealing with wine businesses, financial issues, organisation and innovation in the context of the wine industry will also be considered.

Recently, rapid technological advancements and changes in various networking technologies such as 4G/5G systems, wireless sensor networks and vehicular networks have been achieved. With the help of these technologies, we can establish ubiquitous convergence networks, which will bring convenience to our lives.

The world is facing a potential crisis in terms of food security. The challenge is to provide the world’s growing population with a sustainable, secure supply of safe, nutritious and affordable high-quality food using less land, less water and less chemical fertilisers in the context of global climate change.

Call for papers: "Internationalisation of Family Business Groups"

For a special issue of the European Journal of International Management.

Internationalisation strategies of family business groups vary across developed and emerging free-market economies (e.g. Etemad 2013; Astrachan 2010). While a growing literature addresses issues related to the internationalisation of family business groups (e.g. Zahra, 2003; Donckels & Fröhlich 1991), there has been less of a research focus on (1) how institutional pressures moderate their internationalisation process, (2) the motivations behind their internationalisation (e.g. Ward 1997), and (3) the specific internationalisation strategies adopted. This special issue is open to theoretical and empirical papers that analyse the link between family business groups and their internationalisation processes.

Different institutional contexts might dictate family business groups’ responses to institutional pressures. Formal (official regulations and laws) and informal (traditions and customs) institutions might challenge the internationalisation of family business groups (e.g. Dickson et al. 2006). It might be argued that in turbulent institutional settings, both challenges and opportunities encourage the internationalisation of family business groups. External challenges may be in developing alliances with partners with local knowledge (e.g. Lu & Beamish, 2001). However, family business groups could also face internal challenges, as their members could have different global visions, mindsets and entrepreneurial personalities (e.g. Hutchinson et al. 2007).

Pedestrian-friendly vehicles


Researchers from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute in Ann Arbor, USA, suggest that as SUVs (sports-utility vehicles) become more popular on our roads and as the expediency with which an aging population can cross those roads diminishes, so the number of collisions between vehicle and pedestrian with concomitant torso injury will rise. The team have reviewed the research literature on vehicle safety and suggest that while there is a conflict between pedestrian safety and economic SUV design, there are also many passive safety designs and active safety designs that have demonstrated that might be deployed by manufacturers more widely in order to reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities.

Printing up body parts


A low-cost 3D, or fast prototyping, printer can be used to create porous and biodegradable scaffolds for tissue engineering. The structures could be used to grow living cells in the shape of a particular organ or tissue for subsequent transplant with the scaffold degrading in the body and being excreted like any other bodily waste product once the tissue was in place. The new type of scaffold is being developed by researchers in the Fluid Technology and Microfluidics at the University of Rostock, Germany. The team points out that they can easily control the size and shape of the pores within the scaffold and could thus tailor its properties to accommodate different cell types as well as allowing blood vessels and the body’s own cells to grow appropriately into the implanted structure. The low cost and simplicity of such an approach might make it easier to create “living” replacement heart valves, skin grafts, prosthetics and even whole organs possible.

Healthy fast food? There’s an app for that


Might mobile technology allow consumers of fast food to eat more healthily? Researchers at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in Garza García in Mexico, recruited several managers at fast food outlets and a number of their customers to test a smart phone system that would allow customers to scan a quick response (QR) code on the menu that would provide them with detailed nutritional information about the food they were about to eat. This is information usually missing from a meal eaten outside the home. The team found that customers were happy to use the app if the information provided by the restaurants was known to be accurate. Conversely, the potential of a social media ratings element would likely encourage restaurateurs to provide more nutritious food and to tailor their menus more precisely to the culinary desires of their patrons whether they are after a burger or a three-course meal.

I have the touch


Haptics in the context of computing is a technology that allows an interaction with the device, a computer, mobile phone, tablet PC through a touch interface. Features are often incorporated into the software and hardware to give users the feeling, through vibrations and sounds, that they are clicking and pressing actual buttons and other objects on the screen rather than simply touching their finger to a sheet of glass or plastic. Researchers at Nagasaki University, Japan, are investigating one aspect of such pseudo-haptics in the form of controlled cursor movements that emulate “motion blur”. Motion blur is common in photography, wherein a longer than normal exposure is used to slur the motion of a fast car or athlete for instance and so give a sense of car or the athlete’s speed. The team has exploited the familiarity of motion blur in photographs to endow a moving cursory with a “feeling” of viscosity when a person slides their finger across a touch screen to move the cursor, pressure sensors in the touch screen synchronizing the viscosity with the pressure applied to give more expressive feedback and make the otherwise two dimension experience of a touch screen a greater feeling of reality. The work could have applications in all kinds of software from games to graphic design.
