Call for papers: "Advances in the Machining of Composite Materials III"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Machining and Machinability of Materials.

The use of composite materials has increased in several areas of application such as the aeronautic, automotive and biomedical fields, as well as in other advanced industries, because of their specific properties and combination of light weight, very high strength and high stiffness. Consequently, it is necessary to understand the questions associated with the machinability of these materials.

Machining composite materials is a rather complex task owing to their heterogeneity and heat sensitivity, and to the fact that reinforcements are extremely abrasive. In this respect, this special issue aims to present a collection of examples of advances in traditional and non-traditional machining of composite materials. The issue will be of interest to academics and researchers; materials, manufacturing and mechanical engineers; and professionals working in composite manufacturing and related industries.

An 11-point plan for the Indigenous Internet

Improving computer literacy and building internet and communications technology (ICT) skills in Indigenous communities is more about understanding the opportunities rather than imposing “Western” style learning programs, according to a new study published in the International Journal of Social Media and Interactive Learning Environments. The paper’s author Michelle Eady of the University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, offers an 11-point plan to help those working with communities to adopt and engage with the Internet.

The internet represents an unprecedented opportunity for employment training and development across the globe. Unfortunately, there is a digital divide between the culture of the developed world underpinned by the technological nations of East Asia and people who live in indigenous communities, such as those in Australia, North America and elsewhere.

Educators have attempted to close this gap by applying the same approaches used to bridge the digital divide in the wider communities of the USA and Europe.

Unfortunately, the educational methods of the West do not always translate well to indigenous communities, where they are not only perceived as imperialistic in some quarters but also fail to acknowledge important cultural differences. This is often compounded by the fact that many indigenous communities are disadvantaged by geographical barriers, government policies, language background, poverty, and health and technical insufficiencies, Eady reports. Eady has laid out eleven principles for working together with and assisting Indigenous communities to prepare and effectively and efficiently use ICT:
  1. Develop an awareness and understanding of learners’ profiles
  2. Create opportunities for online learning communities
  3. Ensure teaching materials have content relevant to the community
  4. Support and enhance traditions and cultural diversity
  5. Provide accessible, suitable and reliable technology
  6. Make programs intergenerational and inclusive
  7. Foster positive relationships, mentoring and support
  8. Promote community-based learning
  9. Encourage genuine government involvement and “bottom up” partnerships
  10. Understand community goals, directions and development
  11. Embrace Aboriginal ways of knowing and learning through Elder wisdom
There are many other considerations, but these principles based on research with specific Indigenous communities in Australia and experience in Canadian communities could be applicable to other communities abroad.

“[The research] literature has shown that the internet has substantial potential to deliver literacy, essential skills and tertiary training and education to Indigenous learners who live in remote and isolated communities, providing real-time interaction between instructors and learners,” says Eady. She adds that the design-based principles outlined in her paper “provide sound guidelines for future research that engages Indigenous learners with learning opportunities involving computer technologies.”

Call for papers: "Agile Methods for Sustainable Manufacturing"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Agile Systems and Management.

Sustainability is one of the key requirements for the manufacturing industry to be competitive and long term. Sustainable manufacturing refers to a new model of production that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland Report, 1987). It implies that manufacturing companies have to consider three different challenges: ecological (reducing environmental impact and resource consumption), economical (improving overall process efficiency and reducing global costs), and social (increasing social effectiveness and reducing human-related impact).

As a consequence, other than the more conventional firm performance objectives of cost, quality, speed, flexibility and dependability, today there is a new requirement for firms to deliver on sustainable objectives. Traditional indicators of sustainability refer to cost and environmental impact; more recently, human factors – in light of their relevance to process efficiency and general profitability – are also included in this scenario, and include health and safety, human-centred design, workplace ergonomics and work-life balance (Jasiulewicz-Kaczmarek and Saniuk, 2015).

In this context, manufacturing companies are seeking new ways to integrate economic, environmental and social practices to develop unique capabilities to improve their sustainable competitiveness. In particular, novel agile methods for integrated sustainable manufacturing are welcome.

With this special issue, we aim to address various areas of sustainable manufacturing from the research perspective: methods to design sustainable manufacturing systems and measure their global sustainability, best practices to promote sustainable development, innovative simulation tools for advanced manufacturing systems assessment, cutting-edge technologies to realise highly sustainable and competitive manufacturing assets, and novel prototyping techniques to test the level of sustainability of modern industries.

Call for papers: "Digital Killed the Video Stars: Digital Technologies, Sustainable Audience Engagement and Better Organisation in the Cultural and Creative Industries"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Environmental Policy and Decision Making.

Cultural heritage plays a fundamental role in human development as it contributes to building up individual and collective identities (European Commission, 2007). Recent approaches to cultural heritage recognise it as a "resource for a sustainable Europe" (Council of the European Union, 2014), and growing scientific evidence highlights the contribution of cultural heritage to economic growth and social cohesion.

As digital technologies gain momentum, digital art provides cultural organisations with new opportunities for developing sustainable models of engaging with greater audiences (Wands, 2007). The digital age has revolutionised our habits, behaviours and expectations. Digitisation is a process that impacts on identities and cultures and transforms the shape of the knowledge we will transmit to future generations as well as the means by which we can interact with it.

The dissemination and valorisation of cultural outputs requires new production and consumption modalities (Hirsch, 2000). It is important to foster creative and innovative approaches, including development of new tools and methods for the preservation of cultural heritage and its transmission to future generations (inter alia, Flew and Cunningham, 2010).

Cultural asset digitisation offers new settings for the engagement of new audiences in novel ways. New technologies can foster awareness of the importance of cultural heritage and new audience engagement. Furthermore, the adoption of new technologies offers innovative opportunities and dynamic managerial perspectives for cultural organisations and tourism. New technologies empower different types of users to engage with cultural digital resources.

Thus, environmental policy and decision making are required to set the right institutional context in which cultural organisations can operate and within which cultural users can interact. It is therefore relevant to offer a comprehensive view of institutional context and the associated consequences for sustainable tourism and cultural heritage management associated to digital art.

Digital art can therefore improve accessibility to cultural heritage, overcoming barriers that can be either physical or intellectual. Through art digitisation, in fact, the artistic content of artefacts can be delivered to young generations. Innovative ways of interacting with cultural organisations can emerge, and a sustainable interaction with the cultural artefact could lead to a new model of art consumption (Coblence et al., 2014), which would not only consist of passively visiting a museum but also engaging in innovative ecosystems of activities (Schaffers et al., 2011).

This special issue aims to gather debates – both theoretical and empirical works – addressing how technological changes and new business models determine social change and human resources development, foster policy changes, support new organisational models and ultimately lead to better sustainability.

Sweden on Twitter

Twitter is one of the most well-known social media, social networking platforms. The famous, the infamous and the not-so-famous use it to express their hopes, dreams, wit and wisdom, their breakfast and other habits and their grievances with an interested public. Many accounts on the service are also automated, driven by software known as bots, whether for spam, scam or legitimate information dissemination. Then, there is the curiosity that is the account known as @sweden.

As the name of this account would suggest, it’s Swedish. In fact, it’s a vehicle of the Swedish state. But, unlike many other official national Twitter feeds, the reins to @Sweden change hands regularly, with a different Swede curating the account each week; the account has been online since January 2009. The website associated with the @sweden Twitter account says:

“For seven days, she or he tweets about life in Sweden, love or work, sharing opinions and ideas along the way. Then, someone else does the same – but differently.”

Writing in the International Journal of Diplomacy and Economy, Helen Hoffmann of the Euroculture Programme, at the University of Uppsala, Sweden, describes @sweden in more detail and discusses in what way the account is an “organ of the state”, how it contributes to the ephemeral notion of “digital diplomacy, if it does at all. Indeed, Hoffmann has undertaken a thorough media analysis and carried out interviews with those involved in the project and compares the theoretical demands on the account with the reality. She explains that, “Curators of Sweden does not fulfil the criteria for digital diplomacy but instead is part of well-concerted nation-branding.” Additionally, the existence and operation of this account also highlights the digital divide between the connected public and the unconnected or disconnected members of society.

Hoffmann concludes with some advice for would be digital diplomats: “Social media will continue to play a role in all parts of people’s lives and thus in the realm of state-to-citizen interaction as well. In order to remain relevant to their audiences, diplomats should re-examine the advantages and disadvantages of Twitter for their particular organisation and employ the medium only where it is applicable and used optimally.”

Research Picks Extra – January 2016

Oil spill vapor
Oil spills and leaks not only cause devastation to marine environments and coastal regions but the vast quantities of hydrocarbon that are released can have wider environmental implications. Researchers at the University of Kuwait have developed a new computer model to help understand the release of hydrocarbon vapors from continuous flow oil leaks, such as that which occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010 from the Macondo Well, which was not blocked until July of that year. In this instance, the model matches historical data recorded by US government organizations and thus suggests it may be useful in predicting the rate of release given oil well conditions and weather patterns during a future leak and so allow remediation technology to be implemented in a more timely and effective manner.

Riazi, M.R. (2016) ‘Modelling and predicting the rate of hydrocarbon vaporisation from oil spills with continuous oil flow’, Int. J. Oil, Gas and Coal Technology, Vol. 11, No. 1, pp.93–110.

Students and lecturers communicating
How does the modern student interact with their lecturers in the age of social media and smart phones? That was the question researchers from Iran and Malaysia were hoping to answer. It turns out, that despite online networks, blogs, text messages and email, students still prefer direct face-to-face contact with their lecturers. That said, if such personal contact is not possible, then communication by mobile phone runs a close second. Of course, when it comes to rich media communications, often email and mobile phone communication are the most appropriate ways to connect and share images, data and other content from assignments and such.

Remanufacturing engines
Technology researchers in China have developed a three-dimensional method for evaluating whether a used vehicle engine might be remanufactured rather than the engine being recycled as scrap metal. The three dimensions of their model include technological, economic and environmental feasibility of the processes required to take a worn, old engine and refurbish it to the point where it might be used in another vehicle. A case study with a five-year old diesel engine demonstrated that such an engine would have good remanufacturability.

Shi, J., Li, T. and Liu, Z. (2015) ‘A three-dimensional method for evaluating the remanufacturability of used engines’, Int. J. Sustainable Manufacturing, Vol. 3, No. 4, pp.363–388.

Social networking decisions
Data warehousing and online analytical processing tools can be used to build a semantic framework for understanding social networks according to researchers in Algeria and France. The team’s use of Community Cube architecture allowed them to develop NetCuboid which takes into account network entities, user-generated content and the topological structure of a network to build a model that can assist in decision making based on the social network data. The same architecture answers analytical questions the answers to which were simply inaccessible to previous approaches.

Hannachi, L., Benblidia, N., Boussaid, O. and Bentayeb, F. (2015) ‘Community Cube: a semantic framework for analysing social network data’, Int. J. Metadata, Semantics and Ontologies, Vol. 10, No. 3, pp.155–169.

The reclaimed road to retention
Reclaimed asphalt road surfacing materials can be used with crushed with brick to make a pollution-trapping filter material for bioretention applications, according to Australian scientists. Bioretention systems are used increasingly in urban stormwater management systems to prevent runoff from roads and industrial sites and so to protect surrounding areas from flooding and exposure to toxic pollutants. Generally these systems rely on quarried materials, which is a drain on resources. Recycled materials would be a more sustainable alternative. Tests have been carried out on such reclaimed materials including particle size distribution, organic content, pH, specific gravity, flakiness index and hydraulic conductivity. In addition the materials’ ability to assimilate pollutants containing phosphorus and nitrogen have been assessed the materials demonstrated to be compliant with applicable environmental protection regulations.

Rahman, M.A., Imteaz, M.A. and Arulrajah, A. (2016) ‘Suitability of reclaimed asphalt pavement and recycled crushed brick as filter media in bioretention applications’, Int. J. Environment and Sustainable Development, Vol. 15, No. 1, pp.32–48.

Mending a broken heart
Aortic tissue from a pig can be constituted with gold nanoparticles to make a transplantable material for arterial repair in humans, according to US researchers. “There is currently a need for better vascular and cardiac repair materials. These materials must be biocompatible and resist rupture, calcification, and degradation,” the team reports. As such, materials of biological origin such as porcine tissues offer just such a set of properties provided they are “decellularized” to preclude rejection by the patient’s immune system. The use of gold nanoparticles to reinforce the tissue has nothing but a positive effect on the structure and strength of the material, as demonstrated in laboratory tests, thus revealing great promise as a material for patching damaged or repaired arteries.

Ostdiek, A.M., Grant, S. and Grant, D. (2015) ‘Mechanical and in vitro characterisation of decellularised porcine aortic tissue conjugated with gold nanoparticles as a vascular repair material’, Int. J. Nano and Biomaterials, Vol. 6, No. 1, pp.1–17.

Avoiding the innovative “sickie”
Researchers in The Netherlands have investigated the effect of workplace innovation on how well an organization performs and the frequency of employee absence due to sickness, the proverbial “sickie”. The findings suggest that organizations that are more proactive and innovative in the workplace perform better and see lower levels of staff sick leave. Interventions in terms of flexible working and smarter human resource management seem to be the key to this efficiency margin over less innovative companies. The team suggests that a national attitude to workplace innovation could give a whole country better opportunities to outperform other nations in the global marketplace if sufficient organizations adopt the requisite practices.

Oeij, P.R.A. and Vaas, F. (2016) ‘Effect of workplace innovation on organisational performance and sickness absence’, World Review of Entrepreneurship, Management and Sustainable Development, Vol. 12, No. 1, pp.101–129.

Social power
Could a social media app that allows electricity consumers to share their efficiency targets and actual usage help nudge people to be “greener” in their use of this costly commodity in much the same weigh that dieting clubs help people lose weight by sharing the burden? That’s the novel idea from a collaboration between researchers in Cyprus and Greece who have developed the online application Social Electricity. The app helps users see what is considered normal and perhaps acceptable consumption and take steps to reduce their electricity footprint if they are shown to be consuming too much. A focus group of almost 200 electricity users tested over a six month period demonstrated how users could be encouraged to be more sensitive about the environment and adopt pro-environmental behavior.

Kamilaris, A., Pitsillides, A. and Fidas, C. (2016) ‘Social Electricity: a case study on users perceptions in using green ICT social applications’, Int. J. Environment and Sustainable Development, Vol. 15, No. 1, pp.67–88.
