Progress in Industrial Ecology, An International Journal 3(4) 2006 is a special issue: Historical perspective on industrial waste recycling. Topics include the industrial waste reduction and recycling programme at Ford Motor Company’s River Rouge complex in the 1920s and 1930s; the US scrap markets in the last two centuries; the scrap-iron ‘bonanza’ that followed the introduction of the railroad in Ontario in the 19th century; US wartime recycling; waste-free technology’ in the final decades of the USSR; and the recovery and reuse of sewage and other urban wastes in 19th century Stockholm.
