Call for papers: "Emergent Integrative Research Strategies within Tourism Studies"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Tourism Anthropology.

The complex effects of tourism and touristic travel often require integrative, comprehensive methods to answer research questions that seek to more fully understand the tourist phenomenon. The dynamic nature of tourism systems, the surprising ways tourism unfolds over time and the discontinuities and instabilities located in tourism development strategies have encouraged social scientists to increasingly explore interdisciplinary research and mixed methods approaches. However, the integration of different methodological systems and engagement across disciplinary boundaries may introduce complications within data collection, analysis, or translation of findings.

This special issue invites submissions that focus on emergent integrative research strategies within tourism studies that seek to overcome such challenges. The issue encourages an engagement with manuscripts that explore increasing the methodological and analytical understandings between disciplines, as well as the interdisciplinary methodological sophistication of tourism studies.

Given the interest in integrated methods — which seek to increase dialogue across the social sciences — this issue seeks submissions from disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, human geography, economics, public health and tourism studies, as well as those engaged within collaborative, interdisciplinary research. Empirical and conceptual papers situated within discussions of integrated/mixed methods are welcome.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Theorising tourism research strategies
• Analytical modelling of tourism impacts
• Case studies grounded in collaborative, interdisciplinary research
• Case studies incorporating integrated methods, such as combining ethnographic, demographic and sociolinguistic methods
• Innovative methodologies created for or adapted to tourism research
• Social impact analysis and assessment tools
• Methods in applied tourism studies
• Research attending to the question of scale and scalar politics
• Challenges of and solutions to translating ethnographic findings for policy consideration

Notification of acceptance/rejection to authors: 1 May 2014
Submission of revised manuscript: 1 August 2014
Final acceptance of manuscript: 1 October 2014
