Compared to land transportation, waterborne transportation has many advantages such as lower carbon emissions, lower costs and lower likelihood of congestion. Naturally, there are also accidents of a different nature and with different consequences that are associated with waterborne transport activity.
It is therefore necessary to develop novel techniques aimed at accident prevention (e-navigation developments, traffic management practices), and measures for consequence mitigation (improved decision support systems for evacuation and flooding, ship designs and equipment).
Emerging technologies such as big data, high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and resilience engineering have had a profound impact on ways to improve waterborne transportation safety. Therefore, this special issue will focus on the discussions regarding the opportunities, challenges and initiatives of using the above emerging technologies for more efficient and safer waterborne transport processes.
The aim of this issue is to enhance the coordination of transport information and safety in the maritime and inland waterways sectors through the attraction and presentation of high-quality papers. The beneficiaries include, but are not limited to, academic researchers in the areas of transport information, transport safety and security, risk and reliability engineering, logistics, and maritime and inland waterways. The issue will make significant contributions to solutions addressing today’s challenges for shipping and transport logistics in achieving operational safety, security, resilience, sustainability and efficiency through emerging IT technologies, particularly those involving big data.
The issue will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at the 4th International Conference on Transportation Information and Safety (ICTIS 2017), but we also strongly encourage researchers unable to participate in the conference to submit articles for this call.
