Call for papers: "Business Strategy - Then and Now"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Complexity in Leadership and Management.

This special issue will focus on changes in business and related strategy – in practice, theory and research – during the past twenty-one years. More specifically, the issue seeks to explore the relationship between business strategy in practice and academic theory and research in a field that, generally speaking, began in the 1960s with, in particular, Igor Ansoff, and the Business Policy group at Harvard Business School.

These concerns were examined by Trevor Williams in "The End of Strategy", the lead article in a special issue of the international policy journal Futures in May 1994. In looking at the history and the current state of strategy, the article and special issue as a whole questioned whether it was valid or useful to make a distinction between, on the one hand, practice and, on the other hand, academic theory and research.

More recently, in the 50th Anniversary Edition of the McKinsey Quarterly (2014, Number 3), Ghemawat detects a worsening disconnect between "what companies want from strategy" and "current conversations among strategy researchers in academia". Going further, in Business Strategy: Uncertainty, Opportunity and Enterprise, Spender wondered whether "… a book on business strategy [should] be informing its readers about academics' work? If so, I have failed completely. Everything I have done is to stand all available theory on its head to show what it does not do". Is Spender's judgment useful?

In examining claims for practical novelty and significance, we should not, perhaps, be too concerned to be merely polite. For example, the so-called "Strategy-as-Practice" "turn" has been claimed, as illustrated by the publication of a Cambridge Handbook, to be significant. But its underlying motivation is bogus. Imagine a telephone conversation:

Caller: "I wish to speak to your company."
Receptionist: "Who in particular would you like to speak to?"
Caller: "No, no. You don't understand. Your company's annual report states that your company has a strategy. I wish to speak to your company, not to a human representative."

The notion that, in practice, anybody believes and acts as if strategy could exist independently of human agency is bizarre. It is an academic fantasy. And since nobody in practice could behave as if strategy could be anything other than what people do, the need for a new “domain” of interest is, to put it mildly, suspect. But, whether or not any good will come from the strategy-as-practice "turn" in strategy research, was the diagnosis of an earlier academic turning away from what people do in strategy correct? If so, what had led to that turning away?

In considering strategy over the last twenty-one years, some questions that arise may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • What, in practice, has happened to business models in the world over the last twenty-one years?
  • Has technology - including but not limited to information technology - been the main "driver"?
  • Have genuinely new organisational forms appeared?
  • Does twentieth century science, and the science of the new millennium, have something useful to contribute to business strategy?
  • While knowing that the future cannot be predicted, i.e. foretold with certainty, what sorts of developments might be envisaged? Are there any credible and useful "scenarios" for the development of business strategy?
  • In Mintzbergian terms, how have "strategies" in business and other organisations been in practice "formed"?
  • Has "strategic planning" survived in any recognisable form?
  • Is the attempted newish brand from INSEAD, so-called "Blue Ocean" thinking, both new and significant?
  • Is there any validity in the not infrequent current claim that both the pace of change and the extent of "turbulence" have increased and are continuing to increase? In the context of, say, the last two hundred years, what is the evidence?
  • How, if at all, has the teaching of "strategy" changed?
  • Have successive editions of textbooks changed significantly?
  • Is Freedman (Strategy: a History, 2013) correct in identifying common elements in strategy in war, politics and business - and in his account of the history of business strategy?
  • How, in practice, have managers responded to Ackoff's (somewhat ponderous) question, "What in the world is going on in the world?"?
  • And, for example, are Nonaka and Zhichang correct (in Pragmatic Strategy, 2012) in identifying a four-fold shift in the environment of business?
  • Has "systems thinking" become, in practice, influential? And have any other "...ologies"?

Call for papers: "Grind Hardening"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Microstructure and Materials Properties.

Grinding is one of the most important processes in the manufacturing discipline. One of the key goals for successful grinding is controlling the heat transfer in order to ensure that the workpiece material does not undergo any metallurgical changes. However, this problem can also be considered as an opportunity, as controlling the amount of heat that is conducted in the workpiece material can result in its surface heat treatment. The grind-hardening process is thus a novel, non-conventional machining process that can be used for the simultaneous surface hardening and grinding of metallic components.

The grind-hardening process has a history of almost twenty years. Since its introduction, numerous studies have been presented focusing on a number of aspects of the process such as its modelling, the impact of process parameters, the grinding wheel importance, etc.
The objective of this special issue is to present innovations and breakthroughs that have recently been developed in grind hardening.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Theoretical and practical aspects of the grind-hardening process
  • Computer modelling and optimisation
  • Microstructural and grain size control
  • Material properties
  • Hardening/tempering/stress relieving

New Editor for the International Journal of Functional Informatics and Personalised Medicine

Prof. Timothy B. Patrick from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the USA has left his Managing Editor position for the International Journal of Functional Informatics and Personalised Medicine to become its new Editor in Chief.

Heal thyself, Patient 2.0

Writing in the International Journal of Healthcare Technology and Management, researchers in Denmark explain how the new paradigm of a digital healthcare system, as it matures, is putting the picture of the doctor-patient relationship in an entirely new frame and not always in a positive way.

The advent of electronic healthcare records and the mobile computer in the form of the laptop, tablet and smart phone has led to the notion of patient empowerment. The new medical ethos that began to emerge in the mid-2000s was of a transformation of the traditional healthcare system into a modern digital system in which we, as patients, have access to the information and knowledge previously available only to medical professionals and can now meet our physicians on a more equitable footing.

Søsser Brodersen and Hanne Lindegaard of the Center for Design, Innovation and Sustainable Transitions at Aalborg University Copenhagen, explain how the headline proclamations that future patients will take of themselves via tele-healthcare systems are yet to happen. Patients would not interact with a face-to-face meeting with stethoscopes and sphygmomanometers and a “stick-out-your-tongue”, but via digital sensors and domestic diagnostic devices and a video conference call to their doctor.

“In Scandinavia, the design of future healthcare systems and healthcare technology innovation are top priorities for politicians and technology developers,” the researchers argue. ” An ageing population and an increasing number of patients who are living with chronic diseases have led to increased healthcare system costs,” they add. The same can be said for many other parts of the world. Information and communication technology (ICT) could be key to reducing the number and length of hospital visits in the digital age. But, to make the necessary adaptations to healthcare and upgrade us to the Patient 2.0 paradigm, there are many issues yet to be addressed and questions to be answered:
  • Will the technology-based, self-management view result in an increased number of technologies in private homes?
  • How will the vision change the relationships between doctors and patients, and patients and relatives in practice?
  • How will the newly-empowered patients (or their relatives) become experts on their own illnesses?
  • How will patients’ identities shift from being ‘treated’ to being ’empowered’ when living with a chronic illness?
The transfer of power to patients will inevitably involve additional work and costs for someone, but perhaps reduce the burden on the healthcare worker. The researchers argues that the changes will have implications beyond the economic and logistic gains anticipated by politicians looking to free up hospital beds and reducing waiting times. But, while our evolution into Patient 2.0 means we could undergo home diagnosis and home treatment and continue to work or live out our retirement, Patient 2.0 will have to learn how to share the responsibility for their own health, seek information, stick to medication regimes, measure vital signs and be attentive to symptoms.

The researchers’ case studies of elderly and chronically ill patients show that a 150-year old Patient 1.0 tradition might be overturned to the benefit of both patient and physician, and perhaps even politicians.

Call for papers: "Creating Solutions with Sustainable Entrepreneurship"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing.

Entrepreneurial activities of individuals and organisations are of growing significance to creating solutions to existing social and environmental problems. Entrepreneurship is addressed increasingly often, both in literature and in corporate and societal practice, as an approach to achieving sustainability goals and to contributing to sustainable development. The phenomenon embraces small and large companies, start-ups and non-profit organisations alike. Yet, while some conceptual papers have dealt with the topic in sustainability management and entrepreneurial journals, the research remains sporadic. The role of individual actors is frequently mentioned but has thus far not been examined in depth. Only a few empirical studies have been conducted, mainly as single case studies, thus leaving ample research space for comparative case studies and large-scale empirical investigations.

The rationale for this special issue is that entrepreneurs in small and large companies and across NGOs and governmental organisations, entrepreneurship as a philosophy and approach to creating sustainability solutions can act as a catalyst for the sustainability transitions of markets and sustainable development of societies. This issue will explore approaches to sustainable entrepreneurship and its interaction with sustainability innovations, sustainability-oriented business models and business cases. Sustainable entrepreneurship and related concepts such as ecopreneurship (Schaltegger 2002) and social entrepreneurship (Dees 1998) have been characterised in different ways. This special issue intends to embrace the broad variety of research foci in this area including, for example, entrepreneurial approaches to reducing environmental degradation through entrepreneurial action (Dean & McMullen 2007), to preserving nature and communities in the pursuit of perceived opportunities of economic and non-economic gains (Sheppert & Patzelt 2011), to initiating entrepreneurial discovery (Kirzner 1997) of “worthy contributions” (Parrish 2010) and solutions to social and environmental problems, to searching for the most effective methods of serving social missions (Seelos & Mair 2007), to realising processes of creative destruction (Schumpeter 1939) of unsustainable products, services and organisations through sustainability innovations and the introduction of more convincing sustainable offers (Schaltegger & Wagner 2011), and to creating sustainability transformations of the mass market (Hockerts & Wüstenhagen 2010).

Sustainable entrepreneurship thus encompasses a broad range of mission-driven, profit- and non-profit-oriented, social, environmental and sustainability ventures including hybrid organisations, sustainability-oriented niche pioneers and companies creating sustainability transformations of mass markets. Sustainability innovations, furthermore, are necessary drivers of sustainable entrepreneurship which create variations to existing unsustainable products, services and organisations (Hansen et al. 2009; Schaltegger & Wagner 2011). This raises questions of what is different between sustainable and conventional (e.g. Austin et al. 2006), social, environmental and sustainable entrepreneurs (Thompson et al. 2011), or between sustainability pioneers in market niches, in mass markets or non-market societal contexts. Also, international and industry comparisons may serve for extended research papers. Conceptual and empirical papers specifying the existence or non-existence of differences are welcome.

As many sustainable entrepreneurs want to change their environment for the better, their sustainability innovations need to diffuse and/or scale up. In this upscaling and diffusion process, entrepreneurial success with sustainability innovations depends on reacting to strategies and activities of competitors as well as constant changes in the societal and regulatory environment. Sustainable entrepreneurs are challenged to create new solutions, bring them into the market and adopt them to market, competitor and societal reactions. Once innovative sustainability-oriented business models (Boons & Lüdeke-Freund 2013), products and organisations are developed and established in a market niche, the question arises of which of these survive market selection and remain to finally influence mass markets. We invite papers which examine sustainable entrepreneurship and/or its interaction with sustainability innovations, business models and business cases for sustainability as elements of entrepreneurship. Purely conceptual papers are as welcome as theory-driven empirical works applying qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods.

Call for papers: "Innovation and Competitiveness: Enterprise, Industry and Country Perspectives"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Transitions and Innovation Systems.

The objective of this special issue is to present the most recent research into new approaches to innovation and their contribution to competitiveness at enterprise, regional and national levels.

The relationship between innovation and the competitiveness of enterprises, industries and countries is an important topic for both academic research and economic policy. However, over the past ten years we can observe a kind of paradigm shift in the way innovation is understood and interpreted.

Today, innovation cannot be limited the traditional set of product, process, organisational and marketing innovation implemented in enterprises. There are new forms of innovation, as the traditional concept has been extended to innovation in the public sector, social aspects of development or ecological innovations. In addition, the new paradigm of open innovation that has appeared as a result of collaborative efforts of different partners has also emerged. Therefore, the question arises of how these new forms of innovation contribute to competitiveness at enterprise, regional and national levels.

Given the above considerations, this special issue will focus on the relation between innovation and competitiveness and invites theoretical, empirical and policy-oriented contributions from all areas of the economics of innovation and competitiveness.

The issue will carry revised versions of selected papers presented at the World Economy Research Institute Conference "New Forms of Innovation and Their Impact on Competitiveness: Enterprise, Industry and Country Perspective", although we also strongly encourage other researchers who were unable to participate in the conference to submit articles for this call.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • New approaches to innovation and their role in the process of building competitive advantage for countries, regions and enterprises
  • Innovations in the public sector and their impact on competitiveness of countries and regions
  • Open innovation and its implementation in practice
  • Innovations in green technologies and their role as tools for improving competitiveness
  • Innovation policy at different levels: national, regional, local

Call for papers: "Technology Transfer and Commercialisation in the 21st Century"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Technology Transfer and Commercialisation.

As we move further into the 21st century, the world’s greatest challenges – environment, energy, education and economy (4Es) – can be addressed by developing new technologies and transferring them into commercial products and services. Technology transfer is an important component of a nation’s economic development. In recent years, technologies such as robots, computer-integrated manufacturing, automated guided vehicle systems, the Internet of Things, enterprise resource planning, cloud computing, big data and business analytics have become not only important enablers of national economic development, but also essential for survival in this competitive world. Consequently, so has the process of transforming technological innovations into financial and economic values.

Thus, translating basic technological advances into commercial innovations is a central focus of a knowledge-based economy. There are several strategies and techniques for successful technology transfer and commercialisation. For example, technology-transfer offices are central agents in converting publicly funded academic inventions into commercially valuable product and service innovations (York and Ahn, 2012).

Technology transfer and commercialisation have changed because of rapidly changing consumer behaviour and expectations, global market competition, and the influence of social media and other communication technologies. These include platforms for open innovation and social media such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. Hence, there is a need to explore the latest developments in technology transfer and commercialisation. Realizing the importance of technology transfer and commercialisation in the 21st century’s global market and operations, this special issue has been proposed in order to encourage and disseminate latest research results in technology transfer and commercialisation.

The aim of this special issue is to be a conduit for scholars who wish to explore the above and related issues in the field, providing a brief overview of some theoretical reasons underlying the undeniable relevance of technology transfer and commercialisation for both industries and society as a whole (Bigliardi, Galati, Marolla and Verbano, 2013) in the 21st century. The Guest Editors are especially interested in high-quality papers presenting original research results in all aspects of technology transfer in the 21st century and the translation of their research discoveries into commercial products and services.

Call for papers: "Modelling and Optimisation of Kinematics and Kinetics of Off-Road Vehicle Mobility and Performance by Artificial Intelligence"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Vehicle Systems Modelling and Testing.

Off-road vehicle engineering is the study of the overall performance of a machine in relation to its operating environment – the terrain. Terrain-vehicle mechanics is concerned with the tractive performance of a vehicle over unprepared terrain, ride quality over unprepared surfaces, handling, obstacle negotiation, water crossing and other related topics. The aim of this scope is to provide guiding principles for the rational development, design and evaluation of off-road vehicles.

The modelling of vehicle behaviour, characterisation of the mechanical properties pertinent to vehicle mobility, and the mechanics of vehicle-terrain interaction is a substantial task. As the performance of off-road vehicles over unprepared terrain constitutes a central issue in vehicle mobility, this special issue will focus on the study of vehicle-terrain interaction, particularly those of kinetics and kinematics of off-road vehicles from the modeling and optimisation perspectives.

Vehicle motions are largely due to the shear forces generated between tyres and the road, and therefore the tyre model is an essential part of the mathematical model. The tyre model must produce realistic shear forces during braking, acceleration, cornering and combinations on a range of surface conditions. Rapid advances have been made in the field of vehicle kinetics and kinematics in terms of improving steering, suspension and traction control systems. Optimising vehicle performance has led to the development of new and more efficient systems.

Some attributes or aspects of vehicle dynamics are purely aerodynamic or based on geometric mass and its distribution and tyres. We invite investigators to contribute their original research articles as well as review articles focused on modelling and optimiaation of kinematics and kinetics of off-road vehicle mobility and performance by artificial intelligence. Particular attention will be given to research into and enhancements of emerging technologies dealing with the modelling of vehicle dynamics and optimisation of the associated systems while traversing over irregular terrains. Soft computing-based modelling tools such as artificial neural networks, support vector regression, fuzzy logic, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems and optimisation approaches of heuristic and meta-heuristics are particularly welcome.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Research and enhancements of emerging technologies of vehicle dynamics
  • Optimisation of the associated systems while traversing over irregular terrains
  • Experimental and analytic studies on kinematics and kinetics of off-road vehicle mobility
  • Optimisation of tyre-soil interactions from energetic perspective
  • Adoption of soft computing-based modelling tools such as artificial neural networks, support vector regression, fuzzy logic and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems
  • Appraisal of heuristics and meta-heuristics for vehicle mobility and traction optimisation

Call for papers: "Applications of Risk Analysis and Analytics in Engineering, Economics and Healthcare"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Data Analysis Techniques and Strategies.

Risk analysis and analytics methods and techniques have rapidly evolved over recent years. One factor that explains this development is the outstanding and continuous improvement in software and computing power, which facilitates the use of hybrid algorithms combining risk/reliability principles with modern optimisation and simulation frameworks. Another factor is the increasing use of problem solving approaches that benefit from the so-called ‘big data’ phenomenon.

However, despite these significant advances in this scientific arena, there seems to be an important gap between theory and practice; most industrial sectors (including engineering, economics and finance and healthcare) are only just starting to employ the full potential of state-of-the-art scientific advances in risk analysis and analytics.

This special issue aims at presenting a set of selected articles which describe, mostly in case study style, how risk analysis and analytics methods and techniques have been successfully applied in realistic scenarios. In this regard, submitted articles should describe in detail how risk analysis and analytics methods and techniques were selected and adapted to the particular problem at hand, what challenges needed to be addressed, and how the application of these methods and techniques has contributed to advancements in the engineering, finance or healthcare fields.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited to:
  • Risk analysis

Optimisation problems can be found in every area of science and technology. Real-world optimisation problems are typically constrained, multi-modal, multi-objective and have mixed discrete-continuous decision variables.

From an optimisation perspective, solving such complex optimisation problems is very formidable and demanding. Among different strategies, metaheuristics are the most commonly used techniques for solving real-world optimisation problems, and they generally lead to satisfactory outcomes. Most metaheuristic optimisation algorithms take inspiration from natural phenomena.

A large amount of research effort is being put into developing advanced efficient metaheuristic optimisation algorithms for solving optimisation problems. This special issue mainly aims to cover novel metaheuristic optimisation algorithms and their applications to real-world problems.

Geotagging photos

New information and communications technology and in particular the advent of Web 2.0 and the smart phone during the last decade or so has led to vast numbers of digital artefacts online. Many of these digital entities are uncategorised, randomly annotated and lack any kind of useful tagging. Researchers in India hope to remedy this situation for at least one class of digital artefacts – photographs – by developing a computer algorithm that can exploit metadata that might be present in an image, such as geographical positioning, or geotagging, to associate photographs with a specific event. They have demonstrated a preliminary proof of principle for photos of sports events and political protests. The work could lead to a novel approach to classifying vast repositories of photos, such as those uploaded to Flickr, Google Photos, Facebook and other services by their users in their millions every year.

Glass ceilings

While the feminist movement and equal rights legislation have pushed back the boundaries for many women in many walks of life there remain glass ceilings in the workplace yet to be smashed. Researchers in Lithuania have surveyed female entrepreneurs and found that many hope for a balance between personal life and career. However, stereotypes, negative attitudes, gender roles, patriarchal attitudes, discrimination and social perception still lead to problems for many women. Their findings suggest that women’s careers are influenced by psychological and social factors, which are the most difficult to predict.

Stakeholders in the New World

It might be said that the discovery of the Americas marked a division between the mediaeval and the modern world as it radically reinvented the Eurocentric conception of the globe. Now, researchers in Spain have used this geopolitical pivot point as the archetypal historical example of stakeholder management and applied the putative lessons that might be learned from its study in this context to the business world.

Luxury…

With the idea of luxury goods inevitably comes the counterfeit item that fills the market for those who cannot afford the genuine article and dupes the unwary who can. German researchers have investigated the demand for luxury goods and their counterfeit counterparts in Germany and South Korea. There is they say an obvious trade-off between the genuine and the fake but the European and the Asian socio-economic context provides useful insight into how people shop in those two regions. The team found from their small-scale study that South Koreans and Germans alike enjoy the idea of owning luxury goods and in both countries those who can afford them will buy the genuine article. In contrast, people surveyed in South Korea will only buy a counterfeit item if it is exceedingly difficult to discern it from the genuine item whereas German respondents showed greater risk averseness when offered a counterfeit, imagining (perhaps correctly) that its functionality and quality might be sub-standard and so not be a tenable choice. The study adds useful data to international studies aimed at stifling the black-market for counterfeit goods.

Call for papers: "Transit Migration: Renewing the Focus on a Global Phenomenon"

For a special issue of the International Journal of Migration and Border Studies.

With concerns over protection at sea at an all-time high and an increasing number of irregular arrivals into Europe and other parts of the world, less focus is being devoted to the nearby regions that migrants and refugees depart from to reach places such as Italy, Australia, etc. Thousands of asylum seekers and refugees live in limbo in countries such as Libya, Indonesia and Turkey, and the notion that they will simply wait until protection is available is being proven wrong by the record levels of irregular arrivals into, for example, Europe. Migrants are also taking advantage of the smuggling services offered in transit countries to either obfuscate regular migration channels or access their only available pathway.

This special issue will offer both contextual and analytical responses to transit migration, and will explore whether this phenomenon that is imagined as being temporary often turns out to be a semi-permanent phase that may, in the case of labour, involve integration into the host country. It may therefore give rise to assumptions that, in transit migration, a whole new group of non-citizen labourers is being “created” – a group that is based on institutionalised exploitation as it lacks the rights enjoyed by citizens.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Transit migration and migrants
  • Transit countries, transit space
  • Concepts, policy and discourse
